Seiko Two-tone Dolce: the ultra-thin Japanese dress watch from the 1990s

This Seiko watch belongs to the Dolce line, the Japanese house’s high-end dress collection, and can be worn equally by a woman or a man. Appearing in the 1980s in the wake of the Grand Quartz, the Dolce upholds a simple, exacting idea: a de ville watch should never draw attention to itself. Here, the round case measures 32mm (34mm with the crown) with a thickness of only 5.3mm, and a restrained Lug-to-lug of 35.6mm. Nothing protrudes, nothing weighs it down.

The white checkered dial is the only luxury this piece allows itself. The embossed motif, in a fine checkerboard, reveals itself only in raking light: from the front, the dial returns to a silver-white plane, motionless. The indexes are simple applied gilt batons, double at 12 o’clock. Two slender, faceted gilt hands are all that is needed: no seconds hand, no date, no compromise. The Seiko signature occupies the upper part of the dial, the Dolce name the lower part, in handwritten italics.

Inside beats the caliber Seiko 5E30, an analog quartz movement produced in Japan during the 1990s and reserved for the Dolce and Cadet dress lines. Its two-hand construction, without a seconds train or date display, is precisely what allows the 5.3mm profile: Seiko removed everything that was not necessary in order to gain in slenderness. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipment.

The two-tone finish is the visual signature of the piece. The bezel is gold-plated, the case remains polished steel, and the bracelet carries this alternation in a seven-row brick-style link pattern of type that hugs the wrist with no play. This two-tone vocabulary, very 1990s, has the particularity of working just as well with a gold wedding band as with a steel signet ring. The fluted, gold-plated crown is adorned with a dark cabochon at 3 o’clock.

Three points to note

• The 5E30 caliber is no longer produced: movement spare parts are becoming scarce, even though a battery change remains a routine operation for any watchmaker.
• No original precision specification is published by Seiko for this caliber. We therefore claim no value in seconds per month.
• The bezel is gold-plated, not solid: it should be kept away from repeated rubbing against a bracelet or a belt Buckle.
