Omega Seamaster 300 GMT 50th Anniversary: Omega’s first GMT, steel and wave dial

This Omega watch is a Seamaster 300 GMT “50th Anniversary”, reference 2534.50, issued from 1998 to celebrate the fifty years of the Seamaster. It holds a special place in the maison’s history: it is the very first GMT ever produced by Omega. Its three-piece steel case, with a dodécagonal bezel and sculpted lugs, measures 41mm (45mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of approximately 47.5mm and a thickness of 13.3mm. The crown and caseback are screw-down, the latter engraved “SEAMASTER – 50 YEARS” around the collection medallion.

The black dial displays the characteristic Seamaster wave motif, beneath indexes and skeleton hands generously filled with luminescent material. The Seamaster signature is topped by the word GMT in red and the Chronometer mention; the date window is placed at 3 o'clock. A red GMT hand with an arrow tip tracks the second time zone, read on the bidirectional 24-hour bezel, half black, half steel, whose two-tone contrast signals day and night at a glance.

Inside beats the Omega 1128 calibre, an automatic movement COSC chronometer certified, equipped with a true “flyer” GMT mechanism: the hour hand is set independently, in one-hour jumps, without stopping the watch, ideal for moving from one time zone to another while travelling. It offers 44 hours of power reserve and incorporates an anti-magnetic shield. The movement of this example has been serviced by our watchmaker.

On the wrist, the original steel bracelet, with concealed folding clasp and diver’s extension, extends the case into a sporty, substantial silhouette. Produced in the late 1990s, this piece is now neo-vintage: recent enough to offer the reliability and water resistance of a modern watch, old enough to have become rare and sought after. It is a Seamaster that often remained in the shadow of James Bond’s “Big White,” yet is regarded by connoisseurs as one of the most endearing of its generation.

Three points to note

  • It is the first GMT ever produced by Omega, with a true independent GMT mechanism and COSC chronometer certification: as much a piece of history as a travel instrument.
  • The watch was originally water-resistant to 300m, with screw-down crown and caseback. On a pre-owned piece, however, this water resistance should be rechecked before any prolonged contact with water.
  • The bezel and steel bracelet show visible signs of wear and use, consistent with the age of the piece. We prefer to point this out rather than embellish it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Seamaster GMT 50th Anniversary?
It is an edition of the Seamaster 300, reference 2534.50, launched in 1998 for the collection’s fiftieth anniversary. It occupies a special place: it is the first GMT ever produced by Omega. Recognisable by its two-tone 24-hour bezel and red GMT hand, it is now sought after by collectors, long overshadowed by the Seamaster “Great White” popularised by James Bond.

How does the GMT function on this Omega work?
The calibre 1128 features a true so-called “flyer” GMT mechanism: the hour hand is adjusted independently, in one-hour jumps, without stopping the watch or disturbing the minutes. Combined with the bidirectional 24-hour bezel, the watch allows you to track a second, even a third time zone. It is the ultimate travel companion, complemented by chronometer certification.

Is this Omega water-resistant?
It was originally water-resistant to 300 metres, thanks to its screw-down crown and case back. But on a vintage watch, no water resistance can be guaranteed without a recent pressure test: gaskets age. We recommend having the water resistance checked by a watchmaker before any aquatic use. As it stands, avoid swimming and diving as a precaution.

What is a COSC chronometer certification?
This is an official certification issued by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute, attesting that a movement meets strict precision criteria, within the range of -4 to +6 seconds per day. The 1128 calibre of this Seamaster is chronometer-certified, a guarantee of the piece’s chronometric quality.

Does a 41mm case suit which wrist?
With a 41mm diameter, a Lug-to-lug of 47mm, and a thickness of 13.3mm, this Seamaster is a sports watch with a strong presence. It is worn on wrists measuring from 16 to 20cm, ideally on a masculine wrist. The bracelet is here adjusted to 19cm; links can be added or removed by a watchmaker.
