Omega Seamaster — 1950s Honeycomb Dial and Bumper Movement

This Omega Seamaster automatic watch, dated 1950, is a true collector's piece. It brings together everything Omega vintage enthusiasts seek: a "honeycomb" dial (honeycomb) with a beautifully tropicalized, waffle-like texture, a gold-plated case with clean lines, and the legendary 354 bumper caliber. From the oldest Omega lineage, launched in 1948 for the brand's centenary, this Seamaster is a living testament to the golden age of Swiss watchmaking.

The honeycomb dial is the star of this piece: its fine checkerboard texture catches the light and, over the decades, has developed a superb tropicalized golden patina with warm, coppery tones. This natural evolution, impossible to reproduce, makes each example unique. The applied indices, the gold dauphine hands, the Ω OMEGA Automatic signature, and the word Seamaster in cursive script complete a composition of timeless elegance.

The gold-plated case on steel — a technique known as "gold-capped," a layer of solid gold applied over a steel case — features long, faceted lugs characteristic of the era. With its 34mm diameter, it offers classic proportions perfectly suited to dress wear, faithful to 1950s standards.

The heart of this Seamaster is its 354 automatic bumper caliber, one of Omega's most endearing movements: its oscillating weight does not rotate 360° but instead "bumps" against springs, producing a slight jolt felt on the wrist — a living mechanical sensation, characteristic of automatics from before central rotors. It is the same caliber fitted to the prestigious Constellation chronometer of the era. Mounted on a black leather strap, protected by a Crystal plexiglass crystal in excellent condition (9/10). Selected piece, authenticated and serviced by Atelier Victor. Fast and secure international shipping.

Three points to note about this piece

  • Rare tropicalized golden honeycomb dial (honeycomb): a texture and original patina highly sought after by collectors.
  • 354 automatic bumper caliber: the movement of the Constellation chronometer of the era, a living mechanism you can feel on the wrist.
  • Case gold-plated on steel (gold-capped) with faceted lugs: the authentic elegance of a Seamaster from the 1950s.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a “honeycomb” dial?
The honeycomb dial features a fine quilted checkerboard texture, achieved through a complex surface treatment. Highly prized on Omega models from the 1950s, it catches the light in a distinctive way. On this piece, the dial has developed a tropicalized golden patina — a natural ageing process with warm, coppery tones that makes each example unique and especially sought after by collectors.
  • What is a bumper movement?
The bumper movement is an early automatic mechanism in which the oscillating weight does not complete a full rotation, but oscillates between two springs against which it “bumps”. A slight jolt is then felt on the wrist with each movement — a lively and characteristic mechanical sensation. The 354 calibre powering this Seamaster is the same as that fitted to the Constellation chronometer of the era, renowned for its robustness and precision.
  • What is a gold-capped steel case?
This is a technique in which a solid gold cap is applied to the top of a steel case, while the back remains steel. More noble than simple electroplating, gold-capping offers greater gold thickness and excellent durability, while remaining more accessible than a solid gold case. It is a typical construction of fine Omega watches from the 1950s.
  • Can an Omega archive extract be obtained for this watch?
Yes. Omega offers an official Extract from the Archives service which, based on the serial number, confirms the production date and the watch's original characteristics. This document, particularly valuable on a collector's piece like this one, can be ordered from Omega; please do not hesitate to contact us so that we can assist you.
  • Is this watch suitable for a man or a woman?
With its 34mm case, it is a piece in the classic 1950s format, elegant on the wrist of both a man and a woman. Its measured proportions and gilded dial make it a timeless dress watch.
  • What is the international delivery time?
Dispatch within 48 hours, international delivery within 3 to 5 days, insurance included.
