A vintage gold-plated Nina Ricci watch with a suspended golden dial
This vintage Nina Ricci watch comes from the years when the Parisian fashion house entrusted its watches to Japanese watchmaking. It bears the reference 1400-5160, engraved on the caseback, and the Seiko 1400 calibre, a quartz movement that Seiko reserved for its dress lines and the brands it equipped under licence. Its serial number places it in January 1989.
The design is what sets this piece apart. An oval dial, satin-finished and slightly raised, carries the two hands and the NINA RICCI signature. It is set at the centre of a wider gold-tone tray, mirror-polished, which bears only two markers: a double baton at twelve, another at six o'clock. The rest of the circumference is left bare. The time is read on the small oval; the light plays across the large one.
The gold-plated case measures 26.5mm in width, 28mm Lug-to-lug, and 5mm thick. Its bezel is shaped like a stirrup: two vertical uprights descending on either side of the dial and closing in an arc beneath six o'clock, allowing the strap attachments to slide into it. The Lug width measures only 12mm, which keeps the strap narrow and lets the case alone occupy the wrist.
The movement is the Seiko 1400 calibre, quartz, put into production from 1978 by Seiko's Daini division: six jewels, a 32,768 Hz oscillator, stated accuracy of around fifteen seconds per month, and 2.3mm in height — it is this that makes the 5mm case possible. It displays neither date nor seconds: only hours and minutes. It has been checked by our partner watchmakers, its battery is new, and it carries a 1-year guarantee.

Condition and guarantee
- Overall condition: Fair state of preservation. The oval dial and its signature are clear, the hands without alteration. The gold plating shows numerous and clearly visible surface scratches from wear, on the bezel as well as on the gold-tone plate surrounding the dial — the polished surface retains them more readily than a satin finish. Frequently asked questions
Why does a Nina Ricci watch have a Seiko movement?
Because fashion houses do not manufacture movements. In the 1970s and 1980s, Nina Ricci had its watches produced in Japan, and Seiko supplied the mechanics under licence. Calibre 1400 is listed by Seiko among those used in its own dress lines and on the brands it equipped, including Nina Ricci. The code appears at the bottom of the dial.
What is the Seiko 1400 calibre?
An analogue quartz developed by Seiko's Daini division in Tokyo, put into production from 1978: six jewels, 32,768 Hz oscillator, stated accuracy of around fifteen seconds per month. Its defining feature comes down to two figures: 2.3mm in height for a calibre measuring 15mm by 13mm. It is this size that makes a 5mm case possible.
Why are there only two markers?
It is a design choice, common on fashion watches of this period. Twelve and six o'clock are enough to orient the eye; the hands do the rest. The time can be read to the nearest minute without difficulty once the eye is accustomed, and the dial gains the calm that a complete railway minute track would have taken away.
What condition is the gold plating in?
Marked. The flat surface around the dial is mirror-polished, and a polished surface records every contact: surface scratches from wear are numerous and visible to the naked eye, in our photographs as in hand. The plating remains in place, with no worn-through areas. This is a piece that has been worn, and it shows.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or large wrist?
With a width of 26.5mm, 28mm Lug-to-lug, and a thickness of 5mm, it is suited to wrists of around 13 to 16.5cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. The Lug width of 12mm is narrow: it requires a slim strap, which is part of the balance intended by the design, but limits the choice for replacement.
