A vintage Seiko Lucent watch, rectangular two-tone with white dial
This vintage Seiko watch belongs to the Lucent line, a dress collection that Seiko distributed on the Japanese market in the 1990s and 2000s. It bears the reference 5E21-5C10 and the Seiko 5E21 calibre, a three-hand quartz movement without date. Its serial number places it in 2005.
The case is two-tone: a polished steel rectangular middle case with rounded corners, and a gold-plated bezel that frames the dial like a mat. The gold-tone crown picks up the colour of the bezel. It is a design of two materials that respond to each other without blending together, common at Seiko in this period and rarely this distinct.
The white dial is original, lacquered, with no railway minute track or numerals. Twelve applied gold-tone baton markers mark the hours, wider at twelve and six o'clock. The SEIKO signature below twelve, the LUCENT mention above six, nothing else. The gold-tone dauphine hands are original, with a slim centre seconds hand.
The case measures 24mm in width for 33mm Lug-to-lug and 7mm thick, with a sapphire Crystal and a steel caseback. The movement has been checked by our partner watchmakers; it is functional and guaranteed for one year. The watch is presented on a later brown lizard-effect leather, in Lug width of 17mm.

The steel case middle has surface scratches from wear on the sides, visible in our photographs; the gold-tone bezel is even. Crystal sapphire crystal rated 9/10. Frequently asked questions
What is the Lucent line at Seiko?
A dress collection distributed on the Japanese market in the 1990s and 2000s: slim cases, often rectangular, light-coloured dials and the brand's in-house quartz movements. The name appears on the dial. It is a line that was not widely distributed outside Japan, which explains why it is rarely seen in Europe.
What is the Seiko 5E21 calibre?
An analogue quartz three-hander, without date, with a 32,768 Hz oscillator and stated accuracy of around fifteen seconds per month. It has the hacking seconds function: when the crown is pulled out, the seconds hand stops, allowing the watch to be set to the exact second. Seiko fitted it to its Lucent and Spirit lines.
Is the dial original?
Yes. The lacquer is even right to the edge, the markers are applied rather than printed, and the movement code appears at 6 o’clock on the dial as on every Seiko piece from this period. This dial has not been retouched.
Does a quartz watch require maintenance?
Less than a mechanical one: no winding, no periodic maintenance, accuracy within a few seconds per month. The only thing needed is a battery change, by a watchmaker. The point to watch is not to leave a dead battery in the case: it will eventually leak and damage the movement.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a width of 24mm, 33mm Lug-to-lug, and 7mm thickness, it suits wrists of around 13.5 to 17cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its elongated shape makes it appear more present than a round watch of the same width. The 17mm Lug width can be found without difficulty in replacement straps.
