A bare dial and a stone as the sole marker
This Longines watch, reference L4.617.2, produced in the 1980s, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 32.6mm round gold-plated case. Its thickness of 5.6mm places it among the thinnest dress watches of its generation, whereas most contemporary Swiss dress watches exceed seven millimetres. The lugs are slender and curve toward the wrist, the bezel reduced to a fine outline.
The golden dial features a sunburst satin finish that radiates from the centre and shifts in tone depending on the angle. It bears no hour markers: only a dotted minute track surrounds the surface, with simple golden dots at the hour positions. At twelve o'clock, a set transparent stone replaces the marker and serves as the watch's only ornament.
The slender black baton hands stand out against this golden background — the dial's only contrast, yet entirely sufficient for legibility. There are only two inscriptions: LONGINES with its winged hourglass beneath twelve o'clock, and Quartz in cursive script at the lower part of the dial.
The winged hourglass is the oldest watchmaking logo still in use: Longines registered it in 1889, and it has remained virtually unchanged ever since. Founded in Saint-Imier in 1832, the maison first became known for its sports timing chronographs before developing a dress-watch catalogue to which this reference belongs.
Three points to note
- Dial without hour markers — a dotted minute track as the sole guide, a pared-back design choice that few brands embrace.
- Set stone at noon — the dial's only ornament, in place of the twelve o'clock marker.
- 5.6mm thick — a slim measurement for a dress watch, with contemporary Swiss models generally exceeding seven millimetres.
Why choose a Longines vintage watch?
Buying a Longines vintage watch rather than a new model means accessing a Swiss manufacture founded in 1832 at a contained budget. The vintage quartz watches from this period are also the easiest to maintain on the pre-owned market: a battery change is all that is needed to get them running again.
This reference holds a precise place among men's and women's vintage watches: its 32.6mm format and slimness make it a vintage dress watch that can be worn equally well by both, in a strictly formal register.
Like all our pre-owned Swiss watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our watchmakers: verification of the calibre and its consistency with the reference, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every vintage watch we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and lifetime authenticity guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions
Is the stone at 12 o'clock a diamond?
We cannot affirm that. The transparent stone set on the dial has not been the subject of a gemological appraisal, and we refuse to decide either way without proof. It is the only ornament on this otherwise entirely pared-back dial, and replaces the twelve o'clock marker.
Is a dial without hour markers legible?
Yes, but reading it relies on the dotted minute track rather than raised hour markers. The eye takes its cue from the stone at 12 o'clock and then from the position of the hands, whose black color stands out clearly against the golden background. It is a deliberate choice of restraint in the tradition of the dress watch, where the surface of the dial matters more than the number of markers.
How thick is this watch?
It measures 5.6mm, a slim figure for a dress watch: contemporary Swiss models generally exceed seven millimeters. This slenderness is made possible by the flat architecture of quartz calibers and by the absence of a seconds hand. In practice, the watch slips under a cuff without difficulty.
What does the winged hourglass logo represent?
It is the emblem of Longines, registered in 1889 and considered the oldest watchmaking logo still in use without substantial modification. The house was founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier, in the Swiss Jura, and first became known for its sporting timing instruments before developing a dress-oriented catalogue.
How should a gold-plated case be cared for?
Plating is a layer of gold applied to a base metal, which thins over time in the areas most exposed to friction. A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for routine care. Avoid abrasive products and household cleaners, which accelerate wear. Re-gilding is possible with a specialist but removes the original traces from the case.
