Vintage Lip Watch: a Tank française watch with a salmon dial

This vintage Lip watch is an elegant dress watch of distinctive form, signed by the renowned manufacture française of Besançon. Its rectangular gold-plated case, enhanced with gadroons (fine raised lines) at the top and bottom, gives it a graphic Art Deco-inspired character. But its true highlight lies elsewhere: a superb salmon dial, warm and rare. With its delicate proportions, it is ideally worn on a woman’s wrist — or by a man with a slender wrist who appreciates small dress pieces.

The salmon dial is the true standout feature of this Lip: a warm, rare, and sought-after rose-gold hue, accentuated by a fine mesh of vertical striations that delicately catches the light. The Lip logo appears beneath 12 o’clock, accompanied by Arabic numerals at the four cardinal points (12, 3, 6, and 9) and two slender black hands. A dial that is both understated and expressive, whose contrast between the salmon, black, and gold lends it all its charm.

This watch is powered by a mechanical hand-wound movement, the Lip caliber T13. Created in 1958 by the Besançon manufacture, this small square-shaped caliber (“tonneau”, 13 mm wide) was intended for high-end dress watches, notably women’s models. A mechanical hand-wound watch is wound every day by hand, with no battery: a simple gesture that perpetuates watchmaking tradition. Refined and reliable, this movement embodies the historic savoir-faire of Lip.

With its 18mm case measuring 29.5mm in Lug-to-lug, this vintage watch displays modest proportions, perfect for a slender wrist — a true small dress watch. The gold-plated case presents a natural, even patina, consistent with its age and disclosed with full transparency; the acrylic Crystal is rated 8/10. It is fitted on a textured black leather strap, possibly original, with its Buckle.

Three points to note

  • Rare vertically striped salmon dial: a warm and sought-after tone, signed Lip.

Frequently asked questions

What year is this Lip watch from?
Its T13 caliber, created by Lip in 1958, places this watch in the 1960s. As the manufacture Lip did not inscribe the production date on its watches, the estimate is based on the movement type and the style of the piece, characteristics of that period.

What is a "Tank" watch?
"Tank" refers to a watch style with a rectangular case, popularized by Cartier in the early 20th century; the term is now commonly used for this shape. This piece is not a Cartier: it is a Lip, a française manufacture, which takes up the rectangular silhouette.

What is the Lip manufacture?
Lip is one of the oldest French watch manufactures, established in Besançon. Renowned for its mechanical watches throughout the 20th century, it is part of French horological heritage and remains highly prized by collectors.

Is the salmon dial original?
Yes, the striped salmon dial is original. This rare pink-gold hue is particularly sought after: it brings warmth and character that set this Lip apart from more classic white or silver dials.

Is this watch suitable for a man or a woman?
Given its modest proportions (18 mm wide), it is above all a women’s watch or one for a slender wrist. Its T13 caliber was in fact intended for ladies’ watches. It can also be worn as a small men’s dress watch, for those who appreciate discreet, elegant pieces.
