Atelier Note

A 36mm 18k rose gold case, an original cream dial with patina born of time, unrestored. An IWC from the years 1958 to 1963, powered by the automatic calibre 853. Serviced, delivered with its Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate.

An 18k rose gold IWC from around 1960, automatic calibre 853

IWC, the International Watch Company, was founded in 1868 in Schaffhausen by the American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones. At the beginning of the 1950s, the manufacture equipped its automatic calibres with the Pellaton winding system, which it patented; calibre 853, produced from 1958 to 1963, inherited it.

The cream dial, original and unrestored, has acquired an even patina over the decades. It bears the International Watch Co signature in cursive and the word Schaffhausen below 12 o'clock, and the word Automatic above 6 o'clock. Applied gold-tone baton markers, doubled at 12 o'clock, and a dotted minute track mark its perimeter; the gold-tone dauphine hands and centre seconds stand out against this warm background.

The round 18k rose gold case measures 36mm in diameter, 43mm Lug-to-lug and 11.7mm thick. Its smooth bezel and straight lugs give the watch the sober design of dress watches from the period; the 18mm Lug width holds the strap.

The watch is powered by the IWC calibre 853, with Pellaton automatic winding and 21 jewels. It is fitted with a brown crocodile-embossed leather strap, fastened by a rose gold-tone Buckle pin buckle.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it described as a Calatrava-style watch?
The term here refers to a style: a round dress watch, with a smooth case, clean dial and baton markers. This is an IWC watch, signed International Watch Co Schaffhausen, with no connection to any other maison.

What is the IWC calibre 853?
A self-winding mechanical movement, 13 lignes, with 21 jewels and 19,800 vibrations per hour, produced by IWC from 1958 to 1963. It uses the Pellaton winding system, patented by the manufacture, and drives centre seconds, with no date.

How is this watch dated?
By its calibre: IWC produced the 853 from 1958 to 1963, hence a dating to around 1960.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 36mm diameter, 43mm Lug-to-lug and 11.7mm thickness, it suits wrists of around 15 to 19cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. The Lug width of 18mm allows the strap to be changed.

How do shipping and payment work?
The piece is shipped with tracking and insurance by a trusted carrier, to a collection point or home delivery depending on the destination. Shipping is free. Payment by bank transfer benefits from a 3% discount.
