Dolce: five millimetres thick and two hands
This watch Seiko belongs to the Dolce line, reference 8N40-6090, dated 1992. It is a Japanese quartz dress watch, whose round steel case measures 32mm in diameter and 5mm thick, with a gold-tone bezel surrounding the dial.
The case is built in one piece with its attachments: the middle case widens into two flat, polished shoulders that receive the bracelet with no visible lugs, and the watch measures 36mm from top to bottom. The fluted gold-tone crown sits flush with the side at three o'clock. The five millimetres between the caseback and the Crystal are the reason this line exists.
The silver-tone dial is guilloché with fine vertical ribbing running from edge to edge and changing in appearance depending on the angle. Twelve applied gold-tone baton markers mark the hours, doubled by a dotted minute track around the edge. Below twelve, the SEIKO signature; above six o'clock, the DOLCE marking. At the bottom of the dial, the factory marking JAPAN 8N40-6170 D.
Only two gold-tone hands, tapered batons, with no seconds hand: the display is limited to hours and minutes, which leaves the dial uncluttered. The original steel bracelet is the one from the piece, with flat interlaced links in a woven pattern, adjustable up to a 20cm wrist size. The quartz movement, calibre Seiko 8N40, has been checked by our watchmakers, fitted with a new battery, and it carries a 1-year guarantee.

Condition and guarantee
- Overall condition : Well-preserved dial, more marked bezel. The silvered dial is clean: regular vertical stripes, gold-tone markers and hands without alteration, legible text. Mineral Crystal in good condition (9/10). The gold-tone bezel shows scratches and clearly visible marks from wear all around its perimeter. The steel case and original bracelet show fine scratches, more visible on the polished shoulders. The whole is visible in our photographs.

What is the Dolce line from Seiko?
It is the line that Seiko devotes to the dress watch, introduced in the mid-1980s and developed alongside the Grand Quartz models. Its principle can be summed up in one word: slimness. Cases measuring thirty-two to thirty-five millimetres, thickness around five, a display reduced to the essentials, quartz movements. The word DOLCE is printed on the dial, above six o'clock.
What does the reference 8N40-6090 mean?
Seiko references are read in two parts: the first, here 8N40, indicates the movement calibre; the second, 6090, the case code, engraved on the caseback. The dial bears a separate code, here 6170, which identifies the dial alone. The caseback takes precedence over the dial in establishing a piece's reference.
Why does this watch have only two hands?
It is a design choice typical of extra-thin dress watches: without a seconds hand, the dial remains uncluttered and the movement can do without the corresponding gear train, which helps keep the thickness to five millimetres. The time is read by the hours and minutes, as on a mantel clock.
Can the gold-tone bezel be refinished?
We do not recommend it and do not do it. A gold-tone finish is a thin layer applied to the metal: polishing it to remove scratches means removing it where it is still present, and the result ages less well than the original marks. It is preserved by avoiding water, household products and cosmetics, and cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.
How does a 32mm case with a thickness of 5mm wear?
This format disappears under a shirt cuff without lifting it, which is exactly its purpose. At 36mm from top to bottom, it suits wrists of about 15 to 18cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. On a large wrist, it works as a deliberately discreet watch.
