A stepped bezel and applied Roman numerals
This Christian Dior watch, produced in the 1990s, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 30mm round gold-plated case. Its 5.5mm thickness remains restrained despite a bezel whose construction occupies almost a third of the diameter.
It is this stepped bezel that gives the piece its character. Three tiered rings descend toward the dial, separated by fine dark lines that deepen the relief. The result is a thick, almost architectural frame, contrasting with the sobriety of the dial it encloses.
The white lacquered dial bears twelve applied golden Roman numerals, arranged all around the perimeter. The signature Christian Dior appears on two lines in the upper section, in black, and the words SWISS MADE close the dial at the bottom. The golden baton hands, slender and tapered, complete an entirely pared-back display: no seconds hand comes to disturb the surface.
The case extends into a fluted central lug on each side, flanked by two bars, which receives the lizard-effect leather strap. This construction, more discreet than the overhanging lugs found on other watches from the house, brings the strap as close as possible to the case.

What is a stepped bezel?
This is a bezel constructed in several tiered rings rather than as a single surface. On this watch, three levels descend successively toward the dial, separated by fine dark lines that deepen its relief. This treatment gives visual thickness to an otherwise very slim case and draws the eye to the dial it frames.
Why are the numerals applied?
An applied numeral is a metal piece added and fixed onto the dial, as opposed to a numeral that is simply printed. It catches the light from various angles and casts a shadow, which gives depth to legibility. It is a more costly technique than printing, and a mark of quality on a dress watch.
