The Roman numerals have left the dial to be engraved into the steel of the bezel. At the center, only a silver sunburst disc, a signature and two blued hands remain — the time is read astride metal and light.
A Must 21, Roman numerals engraved in steel
This Cartier watch is a Must de Cartier 21, reference 1340, in full steel, dating from the 1990s. The Must de Cartier collection was born in 1973 around vermeil and gold; the 21 is the one that shifts toward polished and brushed steel, with case and bracelet shaped in one continuous design.
Its principle lies in a displacement: the Roman numerals, a Cartier signature long printed on the dial, are here engraved in relief into the steel of the bezel, encircling the Crystal. The dial is thus freed — a silver sunburst disc framed by a minute track, the sole inscription must de Cartier, and two blued steel hands. The crown retains its cabochon.
The original steel bracelet, with articulated rounded links, extends the 28mm case with the suppleness of a chain bracelet and fastens around 15.5cm with a Buckle folding clasp. The lugs are integrated: the bracelet flows from the case without interruption, which prevents fitting a standard leather strap but keeps the watch close to the wrist.
The quartz movement has been checked and is guaranteed for one year. With 5.3mm thickness for 31mm of Lug-to-lug, the piece slips under a sleeve like a steel bangle.

The case and steel bracelet show signs of wear in the form of scratches on the polished surfaces and on the engraved bezel, visible in our photographs; the original bracelet is complete and supple.

What is the Cartier Must 21?
It is the line in the Must collection by Cartier, launched in 1973, which abandons vermeil and gold in favor of full steel. Its design is based on a single gesture: the Roman numerals, usually printed on the dial of Cartier watches, are engraved in relief into the steel of the bezel. It comes in several sizes, from 28mm to medium size, always on a bracelet with integrated lugs.
Why are the numerals engraved on the bezel?
That is the principle of the design: by carrying the Roman numerals into the metal, Cartier fully frees the dial, reduced to a sunburst disc, a signature and two blued hands. Time reading passes through the case instead of remaining inside it, which makes the 21 identifiable at first glance, even from a distance.
Can the bracelet be adjusted to my size?
It currently closes at approximately 15.5cm wrist circumference. Removing links for a smaller wrist is possible with a watchmaker; to enlarge it, compatible links must be sourced. As the lugs are integrated into the case, a standard leather strap cannot be fitted. Let us know your wrist circumference before purchase and we will confirm what is possible.
Is quartz reliable on a watch from this period?
Yes. The quartz calibres of the Must from Cartier are robust and simple to maintain: the battery is changed every two to three years by a watchmaker, without periodic servicing as on a mechanical watch. The movement of this piece is guaranteed for one year.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 28mm diameter, 31mm Lug-to-lug and 5.3mm thickness, it is intended for slim to medium wrists, the bracelet closing at approximately 15.5cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its integrated lugs keep it close to the wrist, and its thinness makes it wear like a bracelet.
