Breitling Chronomat 81950: an automatic two-tone steel and gold chronograph

This Breitling Chronomat watch, reference 81950, is an emblematic model from the Swiss maison — the very one that marked Breitling’s mechanical renaissance in the mid-1980s. Its round two-tone steel and gold case is distinguished by its famous rotating rider-tab bezel, invented by the house in 1982. A chronograph that is both sporty and dressy, it has an immediately recognizable presence on the wrist. An iconic piece, equally at ease in the city or while traveling.

The silver dial highlights three contrasting black sub-dials — chronograph minutes at 12 o’clock, hours at 6 o’clock and small seconds at 9 o’clock — in a highly sought-after panda style. A date window is positioned at 3 o’clock, while the graduated rotating bezel and peripheral tachymeter scale recall the tool-watch vocation of this Chronomat. Applied hour markers and luminous hands ensure excellent legibility. The winged Breitling logo completes this dynamic dial.

At the heart of this Chronomat beats the Valjoux 7750 automatic movement, with 17 jewels — the first mechanical caliber adopted by Breitling for this model. Robust, reliable and precise, this self-winding chronograph is one of the most renowned movements in Swiss watchmaking. Protected by its sapphire Crystal, this watch was originally water-resistant to 100 meters. Fully serviced, it is ready to be worn every day.

With its 40mm case in two-tone steel and gold, this Chronomat offers ideal proportions and a timeless sport-chic presence on the wrist of both men and women — a true Unisex watch. The sapphire Crystal is in very good condition and the watch has been serviced. It is fitted here with a vintage denim strap, not original, with a steel pin Buckle.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the Breitling Chronomat 81950?
The Chronomat 81950 is the chronograph that marked Breitling’s mechanical revival in the mid-1980s. Recognizable by its rider-tab rotating bezel and its “onion” crown, it became the brand’s greatest commercial success and a highly sought-after modern classic.

    Which movement powers this Chronomat?
It is powered by the automatic Valjoux 7750 calibre with 17 jewels, the first mechanical movement adopted by Breitling for this model. Robust and precise, this self-winding chronograph is one of the most respected in Swiss watchmaking. It has been fully serviced.

    What does reference 81950 / A13047 mean?
81950 is the historical reference of the Chronomat. Around 1990–1991, Breitling adopted a new system and the Chronomat became 13047, preceded by a letter. The first transitional pieces bear both references engraved on the caseback, as here: 81950 and A13047.

    Is this watch water-resistant?
Originally, the Chronomat 81950 was water-resistant to 100 meters. On a watch of this age, water resistance can no longer be guaranteed without renewing the gaskets; we recommend avoiding prolonged contact with water without prior servicing.

Is this watch suitable for a man or a woman?
It is a Unisex watch. Its 40mm case makes it a versatile chronograph, equally at ease on a masculine wrist or a feminine wrist that appreciates characterful watches. Its bi-color sport-chic aesthetic makes it an elegant piece for any occasion.
