Polished steel and the frame within the frame

This Seiko watch reference 7820-5480, produced in 1980, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 29mm steel cushion-shaped case with chamfered corners. The four angles are bevel-cut, the sides curved, and the whole is mirror-polished with no brushed surfaces whatsoever. The lugs are very short and recessed, with visible spring bars on each side — a design that brings the strap as close as possible to the case.

The lacquered white dial bears twelve black Roman numerals arranged all around the periphery, in solid characters of classic design. A railway minute track separates them from the center, drawn as a cushion-shaped frame that exactly echoes the geometry of the case. This frame within the frame is a device that Seiko was particularly fond of on its dress watches from this period: it structures the surface without adding ornament.

The slender black baton hands stand out clearly against the white background. Only three inscriptions occupy the dial: SEIKO QUARTZ at the top of the inner frame, and the Q emblem accompanied by its lightning-bolt pictogram just below the center. This logo, applied to the brand's quartz production, immediately places the piece in its era.

No seconds hand, no aperture, no complication: the display stops at hours and minutes. At 6.2mm thick, this piece slips under a cuff without effort. The 7820 caliber powering it is an analog quartz movement whose flat architecture makes this slimness possible.

Three points to note

  • Frame within the frame — the railway minute track forms a cushion shape that echoes the geometry of the case, a characteristic device of Seiko dress watches from the 1980s.
  • Mirror-polished steel — the entire case is polished, with no brushed surface, which accentuates the edges of the chamfered corners.
  • 6.2mm thick — a profile that few dress watches achieve, including among contemporary Swiss productions.

Why choose a vintage Seiko watch?

Buying a vintage Seiko watch rather than a new model means gaining access to a top-tier Japanese manufacture on a reasonable budget, through pieces whose construction has proven its durability. Vintage quartz watches from this period are also the easiest to maintain on the pre-owned market: a battery change is enough to set them running again.

This reference occupies a precise place among men's and women's vintage watches: its 29mm format and all-steel construction make it a more everyday vintage dress watch than a golden piece, wearable equally by both. The non-round shapes of the 1980s are now back in favor.

Like all our pre-owned Seiko watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: verification of the caliber and its consistency with the reference, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Every vintage Japanese watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and lifetime guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is meant by a cushion case with clipped corners?
Cushion refers to a carrée shape with rounded corners, distinct from the tonneau which starts from a rectangle. The clipped corners are bevels cut into these corners, replacing the curve with a flat facet. The result is a more graphic silhouette, characteristic of watch design in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

What is the Q emblem on the dial?
It is the logo that Seiko used on its quartz productions, accompanied by a lightning-bolt pictogram. At a time when the technology was still a differentiating factor, the brand wanted to signal it visually on the dial. Today, this logo is an immediate dating marker for collectors.

Is a thickness of 6.2mm exceptional?
It is rare, including among contemporary Swiss dress watches, which generally exceed seven millimetres. This slimness changes the way the watch wears: it slips under any cuff without resistance and never makes itself felt on the wearer. It is made possible by the flat architecture of quartz calibres and by the absence of a seconds hand.

Is a vintage Seiko watch a safe purchase?
It is, from the moment authenticity is established and the condition is described without reservation. Our watchmakers systematically open the case to verify the movement and its consistency with the reference, and inspect the dial, hands, and all components. Every pre-owned Seiko watch sold by Atelier Victor comes with an invoice serving as a certificate of authenticity, a one-year guarantee, and authenticity guaranteed for life.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a width of 29mm, a Lug-to-lug of 40mm, and a thickness of 6.2mm, it suits wrists measuring approximately 15 to 18cm. Its very short lugs bring the strap as close as possible to the case, which improves the fit on a slim wrist. The Lug width measures 18mm, making it easy to change the strap.
