The world’s thinnest micro-rotor, designed by Gérald Genta

This Universal Genève White Shadow watch, reference 867102, is dated to 1967 by its serial number — the year following the line’s launch. It wears equally well on a man or a woman, with a steel C-Case case — a cushion shape without an added bezel, whose curved sides come directly into contact with the Crystal. The design is by Gérald Genta, who had already given the house the Polerouter and would later deliver the Royal Oak and the Nautilus.

The cream dial bears only the essentials: twelve applied baton hour markers, the Universal Genève signature above White Shadow in cursive script, the word AUTOMATIC beneath the centre, the date window at three o’clock and SWISS at six o’clock. Only two hands, with no seconds hand or luminous material: this is the rule across the entire Shadow line, and an immediate identifying feature.

Beneath this dial lies what made the model’s reputation. The micro-rotor calibre measures 2.5 millimetres in thickness — among the thinnest automatic movements ever built, a distinction rivalled at the time only by Piaget’s calibre 12P. Its solid gold oscillating weight, chosen for its density, is housed within the thickness of the movement instead of being placed on top of it — the process of which Universal Genève was a pioneer, and which Patek Philippe would later adopt for its Ellipse. The movement, rhodium-plated and decorated, has 25 jewels and two adjustments.

The Shadow line was presented at the Basel Fair in 1966: the steel variation bears the name White Shadow, the solid gold version that of Golden Shadow. This date-window example, dated to 1967, belongs to the very first years of the line — at the precise moment when its slimness was almost without equal. The bracelet is the original Gay Frères, from the Geneva manufacturer that supplied Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet.

What is a micro-rotor?
In a traditional automatic movement, an oscillating weight covers the entire calibre and rotates above it, adding its thickness to that of the movement. The micro-rotor is a smaller-diameter weight integrated into the thickness of the calibre itself — and here made of solid gold, whose density compensates for the reduced leverage. Universal Genève was a pioneer of this system, which allowed it to reduce total thickness to 2.5 millimetres, among the thinnest automatic movements ever built. Patek Philippe and Chopard use it today in their finest pieces.

Who designed the White Shadow?
Gérald Genta, who had already designed the Polerouter for Universal Genève and would later create the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet and the Nautilus for Patek Philippe. The so-called C-Case stands out for the absence of a separate bezel: the curved sides of the case come directly into contact with the crystal, eliminating any visual break and contributing to the overall slimness.

Why is there no seconds hand?
It is a characteristic of the entire Shadow line, without exception: only two hands, and no luminous material on the dial or hands. This choice is part of the pursuit of thinness — a seconds train adds thickness — and of the pared-back design. It is also an immediate point of recognition for authenticating a Shadow dial.

What is a Gay Frères bracelet?
Gay Frères was a Geneva-based bracelet manufacturer founded in the nineteenth century, supplying Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet. Its bracelets are now sought after in their own right, independently of the watches they accompany. Finding a White Shadow with its original Gay Frères bracelet is significantly more difficult than finding the watch alone.

Can the bracelet be adjusted?
It fits wrists from 17.5 to 20cm, with fine adjustment made on the clasp. Link removal remains possible but delicate on this type of construction, and we do not recommend it unless necessary. If your wrist is below this range, let us know before purchase: we will check with our watchmaker what can be done, or guide you toward another piece.

Is the cut pin on the bracelet a problem?
No. It is one of the pins connecting two links, cut during the bracelet’s lifetime. We chose to leave the bracelet as it is and mention it rather than intervene without consulting you, as the bracelet is otherwise in very fine condition.
