A Polerouter Date from 1959, Genta's first masterpiece
This Universal Genève watch is a Polerouter Date, reference 204610-4, dated 1959. The Polerouter was born in 1954 from an extraordinary commission: to accompany SAS's first polar flights, with resistance to the poles' magnetism. To design it, Universal Genève entrusted the pencil to an unknown twenty-three-year-old: Gérald Genta — who would later create the Royal Oak and the Nautilus. The Polerouter is his first great work.
Beneath the dial beats the house's other source of pride: the micro-rotor, patented by Universal Genève in 1955 and claimed on the dial — Automatic Microtor. The oscillating weight, housed within the thickness of the movement instead of being placed on top of it, allows for an automatic movement with a restrained profile: 9.3mm, including the date window. The movement has been checked by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year.
The dial bears the model's signature design: an engine-turned outer ring, faceted hour markers cut into the metal, a crosshair — the central cross that divides the dial into quadrants — and polished dauphine hands. Its silvered surface is heavily patinated: speckles of oxidation, spread across the entire dial, give it the appearance of speckled stone — an ageing that our photographs show exactly, and that enthusiasts of tropical dials seek for its character.
The 33.5mm steel case with straight bevelled lugs — Genta's hallmark — has remained preserved, with crisp edges. The watch is fitted on a later black rubber strap with a textured pattern, with Buckle steel pin buckle.

What is the Polerouter?
It is the watch that Universal Genève created in 1954 to accompany the first polar flights of the Scandinavian airline SAS — first named Polarouter, with antimagnetic protection suited to the poles. What condition is the dial in?
Heavily patinated, and we describe it exactly as it is: specks of oxidation have developed across the entire silvered surface over the decades, giving the dial the appearance of a speckled stone. What is a crosshair dial?
It is a dial crossed by a fine central cross — crosshair, the reticle of a sighting bezel in English — which divides it into four quadrants. This design, very common on watches of the 1950s, served legibility and disappeared in the following decade. On the Polerouter, it structures the center of the dial inside the guilloché ring.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a diameter of 33.5mm, 43mm Lug-to-lug and a thickness of 9.3mm, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its long straight lugs elongate the silhouette and make it wear like a modern 36mm. The Lug width measures 19mm, making it easy to change the strap.
