A 1959 Tudor Oyster Athlete, Rolex-signed Oyster case and sub-seconds
The gold-plated Oyster case measures 32mm in diameter and 10mm thick. It is signed Rolex, as is its screw-down crown; its steel caseback also screws down, in keeping with the Oyster principle, and the lugs take the strap with a Lug width of 16mm, and a Lug-to-lug of 40mm.
The light dial has developed a soft, even patina over time. Applied markers mark the hours, the gold-tone hands are legible against this background, and sub-seconds occupies the dial at 6 o'clock. The dial and hands are original.
The partnership between the two houses goes back to Hans Wilsdorf, founder of Rolex. In 1926, he registered the Tudor brand to offer a more accessible watch, but with comparable reliability; in 1946, he created Montres Tudor S.A., whose technical, aesthetic and functional characteristics were guaranteed by Rolex. Tudor Oyster watches thus received the waterproof case that Wilsdorf had until then reserved for Rolex.
This reference 7927 Oyster Athlete thus pairs the Rolex case and crown with a hand-wound mechanical movement, wound each day via the crown once it has been unscrewed.
The screw-down crown, signed Rolex, is original. The watch is fitted with a brown leather strap, closed by a gold-tone Buckle. With a diameter of 32mm and a Lug-to-lug of 40mm, it can be worn on a man's wrist as well as a woman's wrist.

Why does a Tudor have a Rolex-signed case?
Tudor is the second house of Hans Wilsdorf, founder of Rolex, who registered the trademark in 1926 and created the company in 1946, with Rolex guaranteeing its technical characteristics. Tudor Oyster watches from this period therefore received the Oyster case, with screw-down caseback and crown, developed by Rolex. On a 1959 piece, water resistance is no longer guaranteed: it should be worn away from water.
How do you wind a watch with a screw-down crown?
You gently unscrew the crown towards yourself, wind until you feel resistance, without forcing, then screw it back down while pressing lightly. The watch should be wound every day, preferably at the same time.
Is the strap original?
No. The brown leather strap and its gold-tone pin buckle were fitted as replacements; the Lug width of 16mm makes it easy to change the strap. The dial, hands and Rolex-signed screw-down crown are original.
Is this watch suitable for a woman's wrist?
Yes. With a 32mm diameter, 40mm Lug-to-lug and 10mm thickness, it wears equally well on a man's or a woman's wrist.
