Atelier Note
Twelve gold-tone beveled hour markers on a finely speckled cream dial, two dauphine hands that time has mellowed with patina, and one name, Seastar, registered by Tissot in December 1952 for its watches made for water.
A vintage Tissot Seastar watch from the 1950s, elegance made for water
This vintage Tissot watch bears the name Tissot registered on December 13, 1952: Seastar, reserved for its water-resistant watches. The Le Locle manufacture had been working on this since the 1930s, with the Camping in 1938 followed by the Aquasport in 1939; at the beginning of the 1950s, a hermetic double-caseback enabled it to launch an entire line, elegant before becoming sporty. The Seastar models of this decade are worn in town, under a shirt cuff, and withstand daily life at a time when most watches were taken off to wash one's hands. This one, in steel, is a mechanical watch from the 1950s, Swiss Made at the bottom of the dial.
Its cream dial has become finely speckled over time, a light and even patina unique to this example. Twelve applied gold-tone hour markers, beveled and doubled at 12 o'clock, catch the light above a discreet minute track; two gold-tone dauphine hands, mellowed in the same tone by patina, and a central seconds hand sweep across the whole. The Tissot signature in slanted lettering, the Seastar mention above 6 o'clock.
The steel 34mm case, 40mm of Lug-to-lug and 10.6mm thick, retains the proportions of a de ville watch, with a wide polished bezel, faceted lugs, a steel caseback, and an original fluted crown. The hand-wound mechanical movement has been checked by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted on a dark brown smooth leather strap and its Buckle, both later additions.
Three points to note
01
Seastar, 1952 — the name registered by Tissot for its water-resistant watches, elegant before becoming sporty.
02
Speckled cream and gold-tone hour markers — the dial's light patina, twelve applied beveled hour markers, dauphine hands.
03
34mm steel with faceted lugs — hand-wound, central seconds, for him as for her.
Why choose a vintage Tissot watch?
This vintage Tissot Seastar watch holds a precise place among men's and women's vintage watches : its 34mm size can be worn equally well by either men or women, and it brings together the name collectors most readily associate with vintage Tissot and a dial delicately speckled by time. A Swiss vintage mechanical watch from Le Locle, at an entry-level budget for authentic vintage.
Like all our vintage mechanical watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands and case. Frequently asked questions
What does Seastar mean at Tissot?
It is the name Tissot registered on December 13, 1952 to designate its water-resistant watches, after the Camping of 1938 and the Aquasport of 1939: a hermetic double-caseback construction in elegant watches designed for everyday life rather than diving. The name has remained in the catalogue to this day, where it designates the brand's diving watches.
Is a 1950s Seastar still water-resistant?
The case was designed to be water-resistant when it left the factory; seventy years later, no gasket can still ensure it, and water resistance is not guaranteed. Like any vintage watch, it should be kept away from water.
What are the speckles on the dial?
The patina shaped by time on the cream background: fine, even speckles, drawn by time alone and reproduced by no other example. The golden dauphine hands have developed patina in the same tone.
Has the movement been checked?
Yes. Our partner watchmakers have checked the movement, dial, hands and case; it is guaranteed for one year. A hand-wound watch should be wound every day.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 34mm diameter, 40mm Lug-to-lug and 10.6mm thickness, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 18cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its wide bezel gives it more presence on the wrist than its diameter suggests. The Lug width measures 17mm.
