Atelier Note

Six sides of polished steel, a striated grey that ripples under the light like calm water, twelve white Roman numerals and two hands: seven millimetres thick, and not a second to count.

A vintage 1970s Sofior Grey watch, a steel hexagon with a textured grey dial

This vintage Sofior Grey watch bears a discreet signature: Sofior Grey is one of those Swiss brands from the 1960s and 1970s whose name has left behind only its watches, divers, automatics or, as here, shaped watches, assembled from movements by ébauche manufacturers, cases and dials by specialist makers. The case does everything: an elongated hexagon in steel, six sides, a slim bezel, 7mm thick, and a grey dial striped with twelve white Roman numerals holding the geometry in place. A mechanical watch with two hands, without a seconds hand, in the spirit of shaped watches from the 1970s.

Its original grey dial is textured with fine horizontal striations that catch the light and make it ripple from edge to edge, like moiré fabric. Twelve white Roman numerals surround it, with no minute track, and two original steel baton hands cross it: hours and minutes, nothing else. The Sofior Grey signature beneath the XII.

The hexagonal steel case, 29mm wide by 38mm Lug-to-lug and 7mm thick, holds its six sides within a polished caseband with a slim bezel, with a steel case back, a steel crown and an acrylic Crystal. The Swiss hand-wound mechanical movement was serviced in 2025 by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted on a black leather strap with a steel Buckle, both later additions.

Three points to note

01

Steel hexagon — six sides, 29 by 38mm, the shaped watch of the 1970s.

02

Striated grey, Roman numerals — a textured dial that ripples under the light, two hands, no seconds hand.

03

7mm thick — hand-wound, under a cuff, for him as for her.

Why choose a vintage shaped watch?

This vintage Sofior Grey watch occupies a precise place among vintage men's and women's watches: its 29mm width and 7mm thickness suit both him and her, and it offers a case that no round or rectangle can replace, a hexagon elongated, with the textured seventies dial, chosen for the design more than for the signature. A vintage mechanical watch with a shaped case, at an entry-level price for authentic vintage.

Like all our vintage mechanical watches, this one has been opened and checked by our partner watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands and case. Each vintage watch we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Sofior Grey?
A discreet Swiss brand from the 1960s and 1970s, whose history is undocumented: it is known for dive watches, automatic watches and shaped watches, but neither manufacture nor catalogue. Like hundreds of small assembly workshops of the period, it bought its movements from ébauche makers, its cases and dials from other specialists, and signed the whole under its own name. It is chosen for its design, not for its signature.

Why a hexagonal case?
Because the 1970s explored every shape: tonneau, cushion, oval, and here the elongated hexagon, six sides extending the watch toward the bracelet. The design gives the wrist a geometric presence without weight or thickness: 7mm under the Crystal.

Why is there no seconds hand?
By design choice: hours and minutes only, on an uncluttered dial where only the striations and Roman numerals occupy the surface. This belongs to the realm of dress watches, where the seconds are not necessary.

Has the movement been serviced?
Yes, in 2025, by our partner watchmakers: complete disassembly, cleaning, oiling, and adjustment. It is guaranteed for one year. A hand-wound watch is wound daily, and a vintage watch is not guaranteed water-resistant.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
At 29mm wide, 38mm Lug-to-lug, and 7mm thick, it suits wrists from approximately 14 to 18cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its slim hexagon slips under any cuff. The Lug width measures 17mm.
