Atelier Note

A grid drawn like graph paper, on a blue that shifts from steel to night depending on the light — and the original fluted bracelet, still on the watch since 1988.

A Seiko with a gridded dial, steel blue or midnight blue depending on the light

This 1988 Seiko watch is built around a dial that never settles on a single color. Its brushed metallic blue base shifts from steel blue to nearly black midnight blue depending on the angle of the light, and a deep blue grid pattern, finely drawn like graph paper, structures the entire surface. The applied baton hour markers and baton hands lacquered in white stand out against it with the precision of an instrument.

The rectangular case with softened corners, in brushed steel, extends this geometry: bezel integrated into the middle case, discreet crown, 6.5mm thick. The design is drawn in a single line, with no break between the case and the bracelet.

The original integrated bracelet is the watch’s other signature: its steel links are fluted with horizontal grooves that catch the light in parallel blades, echoing the grid of the dial. It closes at 20cm and can be adjusted by removing links. That it has remained with its watch since 1988 is uncommon.

The movement is a Seiko quartz caliber 7830, with three hands, checked and fitted with a new battery. This watch was produced for the Japanese market: this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market.

Three points to note

01

Blue gridded dial — blue graph paper over a metallic base, shifting from steel blue to midnight blue depending on the light.

02

Original fluted bracelet — grooved links integrated into the line of the case, adjustable up to 20cm.

03

6.5mm steel rectangle — JDM reference from August 1988, never distributed in Europe.

Why choose a dressed-up vintage Seiko?

This vintage Seiko watch holds a precise place among men’s and women’s vintage watches: its 28.5mm case by 34mm Lug-to-lug makes it a vintage dress watch equally wearable by both, and its gridded dial sets it apart from anything the European catalog of Seiko offered at the time.

Like all our vintage quartz watches , this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands and case. Each vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the dial change color depending on the photos?
Because its metallic blue base is brushed: depending on the angle of the light, it reflects a light steel blue or darkens to midnight blue, and the grid pattern shifts from the foreground to transparency. No photograph captures this watch in a single color — that is its character, and it is fully revealed on the wrist.

The dial reads 7830-5060: is that the correct reference?
Yes. At Seiko, the code printed at the bottom of the dial is that of the dial itself, not that of the watch. The watch reference is engraved on the case back, here 7830-5050: the first group designates the caliber, the second the case. A discrepancy between the two codes is normal and is found on most Seiko watches from this period.

Is the bracelet adjustable?
Yes. The original fluted bracelet closes on a wrist measuring up to 20 cm at most and can be adjusted by removing links, a simple operation for any watchmaker. Its integrated construction extends the case along its axis: it is as much a part of the design as it is a bracelet, and it has accompanied the watch since 1988.

Is quartz reliable in a watch from this period?
Yes. The Seiko calibers from the late 1980s are robust and easy to maintain: the battery is changed every two to three years by a watchmaker, without periodic servicing as with a mechanical movement. This one has been checked, fitted with a new battery, and is guaranteed for one year.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
At 28.5 mm wide, 34 mm Lug-to-lug and 6.5 mm thick, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19 cm, the original bracelet closing at 20 cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its compact dress-watch format and integrated bracelet make it a watch that can be worn equally by a man or a woman.
