Seiko steel: the cushion-shaped dress watch with silver textured dial

This Seiko watch is a cushion-shaped dress watch, unisex, worn equally well by a man or a woman. Its brushed steel cushion case, square with very rounded corners and solid flanks, embodies the restrained and robust elegance of late 1970s and 1980s Seiko design. It measures 33mm (35mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 36.5mm and a thickness of 7.6mm. A classic and well-balanced piece, made to slip under a cuff.

The silver dial reveals a superb waffled honeycomb texture, which catches the light in a fine silky grid and gives the piece all its depth. Applied baton hour markers with black inserts punctuate its perimeter, beneath the SEIKO and QUARTZ signatures, accompanied by the small Seiko QZ logo. Two fine blackened baton hands are enough: no seconds hand, no date, only the essentials on this textured background.

Inside beats the Seiko 7820 calibre, an ultra-thin two-hand dress quartz movement. In practice, servicing is limited to a battery change by any watchmaker. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipment. It is the choice of precision and simplicity, serving a beautifully refined dial.

On the wrist, the piece plays the card of timeless classicism. The brushed steel cushion case and the silver textured dial form an ensemble of great clarity, highlighted here by a black lizard-style leather. This strap is not original; it is fitted with a steel Buckle. The 20mm Lug width leaves the choice of replacement straps open.

Three points to note

  • The silver dial with waffled honeycomb texture is the true refinement of the piece: a surface that changes with the light.
  • The cushion case, square with rounded corners and a brushed finish, softens the silhouette while preserving a structured look.
  • The case shows a few signs of wear and the dial some fine spots, consistent with the age of the piece. We prefer to point this out rather than embellish it.

Frequently asked questions

What is an embossed dial?
It is a dial whose surface features a regular raised pattern, here a fine honeycomb grid. This texture catches the light and reflects it differently depending on the angle, bringing depth and discreet refinement to the dial. It is one of the main aesthetic attractions of this Seiko.

What is a “cushion” case?
The cushion case, or “cushion,” is a square case with very rounded corners, evoking the shape of a cushion. It softens the rigor of the square while retaining a structured appearance. On this Seiko, the brushed finish of the case accentuates its understated and timeless character.

Is the case steel or plated?
The case is steel, a durable and resistant material that retains its shine over time. Unlike gold-plated metal, steel does not present a risk of plating wear: it is a robust and understated choice, perfectly suited to a dress watch intended for daily wear.

Is this Seiko water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged, and the caseback pressure is no longer what it was on the first day. Avoid the shower, the pool, and the sea. Simple contact with rainwater, however, does not pose any difficulty.

For what wrist is this watch suitable?
With a 33mm cushion case and a Lug-to-lug of 36.5mm, it is ideally a shaped watch in a measured format, comfortable on a slim to medium wrist and easy to slip under a cuff. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on personal taste and the desired look, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The size is only a guide, never a rule.
