Seiko steel: the Japanese dress watch with TV-shaped case, sunburst blue dial and Milanese mesh bracelet

This Seiko watch is a dress watch for both men and women, with a distinctly seventies design. Its steel case adopts the “TV” shape, a square with rounded corners and curved sides that evokes a period television screen, highly sought after today. It measures 33mm with a thickness of 7.75mm. An elegant and original piece, in the spirit of shaped watches from the late 1970s.

The sunburst blue dial is the piece’s greatest asset. Its surface is finely brushed in rays extending from the center, so that the blue comes alive and shimmers depending on the angle of the light, creating a sunburst effect of remarkable depth. Faceted applied baton hour markers catch the light beneath the SEIKO and QUARTZ signatures. Two slim silver-toned baton hands are enough: no seconds hand, no date, nothing to disturb this magnificent blue.

Inside beats the Seiko 4130 calibre, an extra-thin dress quartz movement. In practice, maintenance is limited to battery replacement by any watchmaker. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping. It is the choice of precision and simplicity, in service of a dial of great beauty.

On the wrist, the piece displays a fully embraced vintage character. The TV case and blue dial are extended by an original Milanese mesh bracelet, supple and dense, entirely in steel, creating a coherent and refined ensemble, highly representative of late-seventies Seiko style. It is a watch that is both dressy and full of character.

Three points to note

  • The sunburst blue dial is the true highlight of the piece: its radial finish makes the blue shimmer according to the light, a highly sought-after effect.
  • The “TV” shape, a square with rounded corners, is an emblematic design of the late 1970s, now once again highly prized.
  • The original all-steel Milanese mesh bracelet elegantly extends the case in a coherent ensemble.

Frequently asked questions

What is a “TV-shaped” case?
The “TV” shape, or “television,” refers to a square case with rounded corners and slightly curved sides, whose silhouette evokes a 1970s television screen. It is an iconic design of that decade, adopted by many houses, and now once again highly sought-after for its distinctly vintage character.

What is a sunburst dial?
A sunburst dial features a brushed finish in fine rays extending from the center, like the rays of the sun. This texture catches the light and reflects it differently depending on the angle, bringing the dial color to life and making it shimmer. On this deep blue, the effect is particularly successful and constitutes the watch’s main aesthetic appeal.

Is the case steel or plated?
The case and bracelet are made of steel, a durable and resistant material that retains its luster over time. Unlike gold-plating, steel presents no risk of plating wear: it is a robust and understated choice, perfectly suited to a watch intended for daily wear.

Is this Seiko water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged, and the caseback pressure is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, the pool, and the sea. Simple contact with rainwater, however, does not pose any difficulty.

What wrist is this watch suited for?
With a 33mm TV-shaped case and an adjustable Milanese mesh bracelet, this is ideally a dressy and versatile piece. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on taste and the desired look, it can be worn equally well by a man or a woman who appreciates vintage-shaped watches. Sizing is only a guideline, never a rule.
