A three-circle dial in a two-tone case

This Seiko watch, reference 5P30-5360, produced in 1996, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 27mm oval cushion-shaped case — an oval with slightly flattened sides. Its 5.3mm thickness places it among the finest dress watches of its generation. The wide, domed golden bezel contrasts with the polished steel middle case and lugs: it is this interplay of two metals that gives the piece its presence.

The dial is the most architecturally elaborate of this generation of Japanese dress watches. An outer cream chapter ring bears the twelve printed Roman numerals, of which only the XII and VI appear in full characters; the other ten are reduced to fine strokes. Two concentric circles separate this ring from a lacquered white centre, on which twelve applied golden dots mark the hours. Three levels of reading are thus layered across a surface measuring less than three centimetres.

The golden dauphine hands, broad and faceted, stand out against this light background and echo both the applied dots and the bezel. The signature is limited to SEIKO QUARTZ beneath the twelve. No seconds hand, no aperture: the display stops at hours and minutes, leaving the dial untouched.

The 5P30 calibre powering it is a two-hand analogue quartz movement, whose particularly slim architecture allows for this 5.3mm thickness. Seiko built these movements for its dress lines, at a time when the brand was seeking to compete with ultra-thin Swiss watches on their own ground.

Three points to note

  • Three-level dial — cream Roman numeral chapter ring, double concentric circle, lacquered centre with applied golden dots.
  • Two-tone Case — domed golden bezel on a polished steel middle case and lugs, a marked contrast on a compactly sized piece.
  • 5.3mm thick — a profile that few dress watches achieve, including among contemporary Swiss productions.

Why choose a vintage Seiko watch?

Buying a vintage Seiko watch rather than a new model means gaining access to a leading Japanese manufacture at a contained budget, through pieces whose construction has proven its durability. Vintage quartz watches from this period are also the easiest to maintain on the pre-owned market: a battery change is enough to set them running again.

This reference occupies a precise place among vintage men's and women's watches: its 27mm format and extreme slimness make it a vintage dress watch that can be worn equally well by both. Its two-tone construction allows it to pair with Jewelry in both gold and silver, which remains rare for a piece of this format.

Like all our pre-owned Seiko watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: verification of the calibre and its consistency with the reference, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Every vintage Japanese watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and lifetime guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

How should this three-level dial be read?
The cream outer chapter ring bears the Roman numerals, of which only the XII and VI are in full characters to provide immediate orientation. Two concentric circles separate it from the white lacquered center, where twelve applied golden markers indicate the hours. This construction makes it possible to layer several reference points without overloading the surface: the eye first settles on the markers, then on the numerals if necessary.

Is a thickness of 5.3mm exceptional?
It is rare, including among contemporary Swiss dress watches, which generally exceed seven millimeters. This slimness changes the way the watch wears: it slips under any cuff without resistance and never makes itself felt on the wrist. It is made possible by the flat architecture of quartz calibers and by the absence of a seconds hand.

Can the chip on the bezel be repaired?
A chip in the gold plating cannot be repaired in the strict sense: the gold layer has been locally worn through, and only a complete regilding of the case would make it disappear. The procedure is possible with a specialist, but it evens out the whole and removes the original traces. We have chosen to leave the piece as is and to point out the flaw rather than anticipate a preference that is yours.

Is a vintage Seiko watch a safe purchase?
It is, provided that authenticity is established and the condition is described without reservation. Our watchmakers systematically open the case to verify the calibre and its consistency with the reference, and inspect the dial, hands, and all components. Every pre-owned Seiko watch sold by Atelier Victor comes with an invoice serving as a certificate of authenticity, a one-year guarantee, and lifetime guaranteed authenticity.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a width of 27mm, a Lug-to-lug of 36.4mm, and a thickness of 5.3mm, it suits wrists measuring approximately 15 to 18cm. Its compact format and exceptional slimness place it firmly in the dress watch category, equally wearable by a man or a woman. The Lug width measures 18mm, making it easy to change the strap.
