The Japanese two-tone reduced to five millimetres

This Seiko Dolce watch, reference 7741-5110, produced in 1990, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 26mm cushion case — a square with generously rounded corners — whose 5mm thickness places it among the thinnest dress watches of its generation. The steel case middle is framed on all four sides by golden elements that follow the curve of the case exactly, and the golden crown is set with a cabochon.

The cream dial is built on two levels. A slightly raised centre, cushion-shaped, echoes the geometry of the case and creates a frame within the frame; the outer chapter, set slightly lower, holds the hour markers. These are limited to applied golden batons, with the exception of the Roman numerals XII and VI, the only numeral markers on the dial. The golden hands echo the design of the markers, accompanied by a very fine seconds hand.

The woven steel mesh bracelet extends the case without any visible break, in a tight weave that follows the wrist like a piece of jewellery. This is what distinguishes this piece from a dress watch on leather: it is worn like jewellery and read like a watch.

Alongside Exceline, Dolce formed Seiko's high-end dress segment on the Japanese domestic market in the 1980s and 1990s — Dolce for men's models, Exceline for women's. These pieces are characterised by particularly slim cases, elaborately designed dials, and carefully considered legibility. They were never distributed in Europe through official channels, which explains their relative rarity outside Japan.

Three points to note

  • 5mm thickness — a profile that few dress watches achieve, including among contemporary Swiss productions.
  • Two-level dial — a raised cushion-shaped centre that echoes the geometry of the case, with only XII and VI in Roman numerals.
  • Original woven mesh — a tight weave that extends the case without interruption and is worn like a jewellery bracelet.

Why choose a vintage Seiko watch?

Buying a vintage Seiko watch rather than a new model means gaining access to a leading Japanese manufacture at a measured budget, through pieces whose construction has proven its durability. Vintage quartz watches from this period are also the easiest to maintain on the pre-owned market: a battery change is enough to get them running again.

The Dolce line holds a precise place among vintage men's and women's watches: it formed Seiko's high-end dress segment on the Japanese domestic market. This 26mm vintage two-tone watch can be worn equally by both, and its combination of steel and gold allows it to pair with Jewelry in either shade.

Like all our pre-owned Seiko watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: verification of the calibre and its consistency with the reference, examination of the dial, hands and case. Each vintage Japanese watch that we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and lifetime-guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

Can the bracelet be adjusted to my wrist?
It can be shortened, but not lengthened. An original braided mesh can be cut down by a watchmaker, who removes the desired length and reinstalls the clasp. However, there are no extension links for this type type of bracelet: if your wrist exceeds the current length, the mesh cannot be extended. Let us know your wrist measurement before shipping, and we will check that the watch will fit you and can proceed with the adjustment.

What is the Dolce line at Seiko?
Alongside Exceline, Dolce represented the high-end dress segment of Seiko on the Japanese domestic market in the 1980s and 1990s. These watches are characterized by particularly thin cases, finely worked dials, and carefully considered legibility. They were not distributed in Europe through official channels, which explains why they are seldom found on the Western market.

Is a thickness of 5mm exceptional?
It is rare, even among contemporary Swiss dress watches, which generally exceed seven millimetres. This slimness changes the way the watch wears: it slips under any cuff without resistance and never makes itself known to the wearer. This was one of the development priorities claimed by Seiko for its dress lines of this period.

How should a braided mesh bracelet be maintained?
A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for routine care. The mesh can retain dust between the strands: a soft brush makes it possible to dislodge it without scratching the steel. Avoid abrasive products and household cleaners, which dull the original polish. In the event of significant soiling, entrust the bracelet to a watchmaker rather than soaking it.

Can a chip on the Crystal be repaired?
A chip cannot be repaired, but the Crystal can be replaced. On a case of this size, a mineral Crystal is easy to source and the intervention remains modest with a watchmaker. We chose to leave the original Crystal in place and indicate its condition rather than anticipate a preference that belongs to you.
