A dial that disappears at will

This watch Seiko The Blackdiamond Collection, reference 5P30-7030, produced in 1993, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 34mm gold-plated case whose 6.4mm thickness places it in the dress watch category. Its bezel is wide, guilloché on the surface and edged with a fine fluting along the side. Four faceted black stones are set there at the cardinal points, in a diamond shape.

The distinctive feature of this piece lies elsewhere, and it is uncommon. A rotating disc makes it possible to conceal the dial. In the open position, one sees a golden dial with black Roman numerals, with the signature The Blackdiamond Collection on two lines beneath the twelve o'clock marker. In the closed position, a black disc covers the whole, and only the golden hands remain visible, floating on an entirely dark surface.

It is a so-called mystery watch mechanism, the idea of which goes back to clocks from the early twentieth century. Seiko transposed it here onto a serially produced wristwatch, which remains rare — most brands reserved this type type of device for high jewelry pieces. The watch changes appearance completely depending on the chosen position: legible and classic, or pared down to the point of abstraction.

The 5P30 calibre powering it is a three-hand analogue quartz movement, whose slim architecture allows for this 6.4mm thickness despite the additional disc housed beneath the Crystal. The Blackdiamond Collection belongs to the Japanese production of Seiko and was not distributed in Europe through official channels, which explains why it is seldom encountered on this side of the world.

Three points to note

  • Concealable dial — a rotating disc makes the dial disappear and leaves only the hands visible, a rare mechanism on a serially produced wristwatch.
  • Bezel set with four black stones — faceted in a diamond shape and arranged at the cardinal points, they give the collection its name.
  • Japanese line not distributed in Europe — The Blackdiamond Collection was never circulated through official channels on this side of the world.

Why choose a vintage Seiko watch?

Buying a vintage Seiko watch rather than a new model means gaining access to a leading Japanese manufacture on a controlled budget, with pieces whose construction has proven its durability. Vintage quartz watches from this period are also the easiest to maintain on the pre-owned market: a battery change is enough to set them running again.

This reference holds a special place among men's and women's vintage watches: its concealing mechanism makes it an original watch that few brands have offered in serial production. Its 34mm format and restrained thickness make it equally wearable by both, in a dress watch register.

Like all our pre-owned Seiko watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: verification of the calibre and its consistency with the reference, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Every Japanese vintage watch we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

How does the concealing dial work?
A rotating disc makes it possible to conceal or reveal the dial. In the revealed position, you see the golden dial with Roman numerals; in the concealed position, a black disc covers the entire dial and only the golden hands remain visible, creating a refined mystery effect. It is a mechanism whose concept dates back to the mystery clocks of the early twentieth century, and which very few brands have adapted to a serially produced wristwatch.

Can the Crystal be replaced?
Yes. The Crystal of this watch bears a dense network of scratches that hinders legibility in direct light, as shown in our photographs. On a round case of this size, replacement can be carried out without difficulty by a watchmaker. We chose to leave the original Crystal in place and adjust the price accordingly rather than anticipate a preference that is yours to make.

Are the stones on the bezel real black diamonds?
We cannot state this with certainty. The four faceted black stones set on the bezel have not been the subject of a gemological appraisal, and we refuse to decide without proof, one way or the other. They give the collection its name and create a marked contrast with the gold of the case. The interest of this piece lies above all in its concealment mechanism and its design.

Is a vintage Seiko watch a safe purchase?
It is, provided that authenticity is established and the condition is described without reservation. Our watchmakers systematically open the case to verify the calibre and its consistency with the reference, and inspect the dial, the hands, and all components. Every pre-owned Seiko watch sold by Atelier Victor comes with an invoice serving as a certificate of authenticity, a one-year guarantee, and authenticity guaranteed for life.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 34mm diameter, 38mm Lug-to-lug, and 6.4mm thickness, it suits wrists from approximately 15 to 19cm. Its very short Lug-to-lug relative to the diameter makes it particularly comfortable on a slim wrist. The Lug width measures 18mm, making it easy to change the strap.
