A gold-plated Seiko tank, with blued hands on a golden dial

This Seiko watch is a dress watch from the turn of the 1980s, of the type type that watchmaking, since the Tank of Cartier, commonly calls a tank: a rectangle worn vertically on the wrist, here with chamfered corners — the four corners cut on a bevel — with a stepped bezel framing the dial with a double line of light. The gold-plated case, with a brushed finish, measures 29mm wide and 6mm thick, with a steel caseback.

The brushed golden dial is treated in the same material as the case, brushed vertically, so that the watch appears carved from a single block. The slim, printed black baton indices stand out against it without weighing it down, beneath the Seiko and Quartz signatures and the quartz emblem.

The blued hands, almost black against the gold, give this watch its contrast — hour and minute hands in dark batons, with a silvered seconds hand crossing the dial like a fine bright line. It is a discreet play of colours, revealed only on the wrist.

The movement is a Seiko quartz calibre 7830, with three hands, checked and fitted with a new battery. This watch is fitted with a brown lizard-grain leather strap with a later steel Buckle pin buckle, both later additions.

Three points to note

  • Tank with chamfered corners — bevelled corners and stepped bezel, the dress design by Seiko at the turn of the 1980s.
  • Brushed golden dial — treated like the case, it makes the watch appear as one continuous block of gold.
  • Blued hands — dark against a golden ground, with a silvered seconds hand as counterpoint.

Why choose a vintage dress Seiko?

Buying a vintage Seiko watch from this generation means gaining access to dress watches designed with a care their period price did not suggest: shaped cases, matching dials, and clean finishes. No current production from the brand revisits this format.

This watch holds a distinct place among vintage men's and women's watches: its 29mm case, 35mm Lug-to-lug, and 6mm thickness make it a vintage dress watch equally suited to both.

Like all our vintage quartz watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Every vintage watch we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and lifetime-guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is meant by a tank watch?
The name comes from Cartier: the Tank, designed by Louis Cartier in 1917, whose vertical brancards evoked the tracks of the first battle tanks. The design was so successful that the word entered the common language of watchmaking to designate any rectangular dress watch, worn along the length of the wrist — across all brands. This Seiko is a cut-corner variant: the beveled angles add eight facets that catch the light, highlighted by the stepped bezel.

What are blued hands?
These are steel hands whose dark hue, between midnight blue and black, is obtained through treatment of the metal rather than paint: the color is in the steel and does not flake. On a golden dial, they offer the best possible contrast without introducing an alien color. The silvered seconds hand, lighter in tone, stands out from them at first glance.

Doesn’t a golden dial look “too much”?
No, because it is all in the material: the dial is brushed like the case, without excessive shine, and the black hour markers keep it in check. The brushed gold of the 1980s has a matte glow, closer to fabric than to a mirror. It is a dress watch that can be worn with a suit as well as with an open shirt, and its restrained size does the rest.

Is quartz reliable in a forty-year-old watch?
Yes. The Seiko calibres of this generation are robust and simple to maintain: the battery is changed every two to three years by a watchmaker, without periodic servicing as with a mechanical movement. This one has been checked, fitted with a new battery, and is guaranteed for one year.

For what wrist size is this watch suitable?
At 29mm wide and 35mm Lug-to-lug long, it is a compact dress format, ideally worn on a slim to medium wrist, where the rectangle retains its proportions and where the 6mm thickness slips under a cuff. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on personal taste and the look sought, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The size guide is only a reference, never a rule.
