A 1981 SilverWave, steel and gold, with sub-seconds
This Seiko watch bears a name that matters in the house's history: Silver Wave, written in English on the dial, is the name Seiko gave in 1961 to its first watch built to resist water — the ancestor of the entire line of Seiko dive watches. In 1981, the brand revived this name for the 2628 family: sporty dress watches, water-resistant originally, including this reference 2628-0060 dated May 1981.
The brushed steel case is angular, cut with facets, and its round gold-tone bezel is held by four gold-tone points at the corners — the vocabulary of early 1980s sport-chic, when steel was worn with gold. The original integrated bracelet extends this design: brushed steel links punctuated by gold-tone pins, echoing the points on the bezel. That it has survived forty-five years with its watch is uncommon.
The white dial plays on the contrast of classicism against this modern case: Roman numerals in black, a railway minute track, and a sub-seconds at six o'clock, housed in a ringed and graduated register — a layout inherited from pocket watches, rare on a quartz watch of this generation. The gold-tone pear hands and the gold-tone sub-seconds hand echo the bezel.
The movement is a Seiko quartz calibre 2628, with hacking seconds, checked and fitted with a new battery. This watch was produced for the Japanese market: this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market.

What does SilverWave mean at Seiko?
Silver Wave is the name that Seiko gave in 1961 to its first watch built to resist water — the ancestor of the line that would lead to the 62MAS divers and those that followed. In 1981, Seiko reused this name for the 2628 family: sporty dress watches with water resistance, produced for the Japanese market. Rarely distributed and never reissued, they are now sought after by collectors of the brand, and often unknown to the general public.
Why sub-seconds rather than centre seconds?
The sub-seconds, housed in its register at six o’clock, is a layout inherited from pocket watches: it leaves the two main hands alone at the centre and gives the dial a classic balance. On a watch with a case as modern as this one, the contrast is deliberate — and it is this combination that sets this reference apart from the other SilverWave watches in the family.
The dial says 2628-0230: is that the correct reference?
Yes. At Seiko, the code printed at the bottom of the dial is that of the dial itself, not that of the watch. The watch reference is engraved on the caseback, here 2628-0060: the first group designates the caliber, the second the case. A difference between the two codes is normal and is found on most Seiko watches from this period.
Is the watch water-resistant?
The SilverWave line was designed to be water-resistant when it was released, and that is what gave it its name. But on a watch more than forty years old, the original gaskets have aged and we do not test water resistance: like all our vintage watches, it is sold with water resistance not guaranteed. It can be worn every day without concern; it is not for swimming.
What wrist size is this watch suitable for?
With a 34mm case and 40mm Lug-to-lug, it is a medium format, ideally worn on a slim to medium wrist, where the angular case and its integrated bracelet form a continuous line. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on personal taste and the look sought, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The measurement is only a guide, never a rule.
