Vintage Seiko Silver Wave Watch from the 1970s, steel with midnight blue dial
This Seiko watch belongs to the Silver Wave line, one of the quartz ranges the brand offered in the late 1970s. Seiko launched the Astron in 1969, the first quartz wristwatch to be offered for sale; ten years later, this technology equipped its everyday watches. This 7546-8340 reference is dated May 1979.
The midnight blue dial, with a fine vertical brushing, has applied baton markers, doubled at 12 o'clock, and a fine minute track around the edge. Below the SEIKO QUARTZ signature, the centre bears the emblem and the cursive SilverWave inscription; at 3 o'clock, the day-date window displays the day in full, with Saturday in blue. At the bottom of the dial is its code, JAPAN 7546-8380 T.
The round steel case of 36mm, with a 41mm Lug-to-lug and a thickness of 10.5mm, combines a wide polished bezel with a brushed case middle extending into angular lugs toward the bracelet. The movement is a Seiko quartz calibre 7546, with day and date, checked and fitted with a new battery. The watch is fitted with its original steel bracelet, with its original steel Buckle.

What is the Seiko Silver Wave line?
It is one of the quartz lines that Seiko marketed in the late 1970s. A pioneer of quartz since the 1969 Astron, the first quartz wristwatch to be put on sale, the brand then introduced this technology into its everyday watches: the Silver Wave is one example, produced in several cases and dials around calibres such as the 7546 in this piece.
The dial indicates 7546-8380: is that the correct reference?
Yes. At Seiko, the code printed at the bottom of the dial is that of the dial itself, not that of the watch. The watch reference is engraved on the caseback, here 7546-8340: the first group designates the calibre, the second the case. A difference between the two codes is normal and is found on most Seiko from this period.
Are the dial and bracelet original?
Yes. The midnight blue dial, its applied markers and the hands are original, as are the steel bracelet and its Buckle, fitted to the watch since it left the factory. The steel crown is also original.
Is this quartz watch suitable for daily wear?
Yes. A quartz movement requires neither winding nor daily setting: you simply put it on your wrist. The battery has been replaced, and its next replacement takes only a few minutes at a watchmaker's. As with any vintage watch, water resistance is not guaranteed: it should be removed before showering or swimming.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 36mm diameter, 41mm Lug-to-lug and 10.5mm thickness, it suits wrists from about 15 to 18cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. The steel bracelet measures 17.5cm and adjusts to the wrist. The Lug width measures 19mm.
