Atelier Note

A dial woven like a fabric of gold, grain by grain — and the original two-tone bracelet, still on the watch since 1988.

A Seiko dress watch in steel and gold, with a dial woven like a fabric

This Seiko watch is a dress watch from 1988, built on an octagonal case: eight clean facets, cut from brushed steel, with a gold bezel trim encircling the dial and a golden crown. The whole measures only 6.5mm thick — the watch slips under a cuff and is forgotten there.

The golden dial is its centerpiece: its surface is worked with a grid texture, a woven chevron pattern so fine that it takes raking light to reveal it. Head-on, the dial appears plain; on the wrist, it catches the light grain by grain, like a fabric. The applied gold baton hour markers and gold baton hands stand out against it, crossed by a silver-toned seconds hand as fine as a thread, beneath the Seiko and Quartz signatures and the quartz emblem.

The original integrated two-tone bracelet is the one it came with: brushed steel links crossed by three rows of polished gold, extending the case along its axis and echoing the steel-and-gold dialogue of the bezel. It closes at 20cm and can be adjusted by removing links. That it has remained with its watch since 1988 is uncommon.

The movement is a Seiko quartz calibre 6030, with three hands, checked and fitted with a new battery. This watch was produced for the Japanese market: this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market.

Three points to note

01

Gold grid dial — a chevron weave that reveals itself only in raking light, intact after nearly forty years.

02

Original two-tone bracelet — steel links crossed by rows of gold, integrated along the axis of the octagonal case.

03

Ultra-thin at 6.5mm — a 1988 JDM dress watch, never distributed in Europe.

Why choose a vintage dress Seiko?

This vintage Seiko watch holds a precise place among vintage watches for men and women: its 28.5mm case by 34mm Lug-to-lug makes it a vintage dress watch equally wearable by both, and its steel-and-gold two-tone look, highly sought after in the 1980s, is now fully back in favour.

Like all our vintage quartz watches , this one has been opened and checked by our partner watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands and case. Each vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is a grid-textured dial?
It is a dial whose surface is stamped with a woven pattern — here, fine crossed chevrons, like the weave of a fabric. The relief is so subtle that it is not visible head-on: it is in raking light, with the movement of the wrist, that the dial reveals its texture. This finish, common on dress Seiko watches from the 1980s, required stamping tooling that smooth dials do not use. On this watch, the texture is intact.

How do you wear a two-tone watch?
With everything, and that is its strength: steel tempers gold, gold warms steel. Two-tone pairs just as well with a Buckle silver-toned belt as with a gold signet ring, without requiring the rest to match. Worn extensively in the 1980s, it is making a marked comeback, and this watch offers its most restrained version — gold appears only in fine lines, on the bezel and the rows of the bracelet.

Is the bracelet adjustable?
Yes. The original integrated bracelet closes on a wrist measuring up to 20cm and is adjusted by removing links, a simple operation for any watchmaker. Its integrated construction extends the case along its axis: it is as much an element of the design as it is a bracelet, and it has remained with the watch since 1988.

Is quartz reliable on a watch from this period?
Yes. The Seiko calibres from the late 1980s are robust and easy to maintain: the battery is changed every two to three years by a watchmaker, without periodic servicing as on a mechanical movement. This one has been checked, fitted with a new battery, and is guaranteed for one year.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
At 28.5mm wide, 34mm Lug-to-lug and 6.5mm thick, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm, the original bracelet closing at 20cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its compact dress-watch format and integrated bracelet make it a watch that can be worn equally by a man or a woman.
