Atelier Note

A sunburst gold dial where the day is written in kanji — the 1979 Lord Quartz, the noble tier of quartz that Seiko reserved for Japan.

A 1979 Lord Quartz, the day in kanji beneath gold

This Seiko watch is a Lord Quartz, reference 7143-7000, dated 1979. At the time, Seiko organized its Japanese quartz range in tiers: above the standard Seiko Quartz, the Lord Quartz occupied the noble dress rank, beneath King and Grand Quartz — watches with finer finishing, better regulation, reserved for the domestic market. This one was never distributed in Europe: this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market.

The sunburst golden dial radiates beneath the Seiko and Lord Quartz signatures: applied baton hour markers enhanced with a black line, three slender black hands, the quartz emblem — and at three o'clock, the double day and date aperture. In our photograph, the day appears in kanji: the day wheel is bilingual, Japanese or English depending on the setting — proof of origin printed within the aperture.

The gold-plated round 34mm case, with its slim bezel and short lugs, extends into the original bracelet: alternating checkerboard brick-pattern links, gold-plated, fastening at 20cm and adjustable by removing links.

The movement is a Seiko quartz calibre 7143, with three hands and a double calendar, checked and fitted with a new battery.

Three points to note

01

The day in kanji — a bilingual Japanese-English wheel, switchable via the setting: JDM printed within the aperture.

02

Lord Quartz — the noble dress tier of Seiko quartz in 1979, reserved for Japan.

03

Original gold-plated bracelet — the period brick-pattern checkerboard, adjustable, that has accompanied the watch since 1979.

Why choose a vintage Seiko Lord Quartz Watch?

This vintage Seiko watch holds a precise place among vintage men's and women's watches: its 34mm case with 39mm of Lug-to-lug can be worn equally well by either, in the register of the classic golden round watch — with that kanji aperture that sets it apart from all European golden watches. The JDM quartz hierarchy of the late 1970s is one of the favorite fields of collectors of Seiko.

Like all our vintage quartz watches , this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: movement check, examination of the dial, hands and case. Each vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Lord Quartz line?
It is one of the tiers in the hierarchy that Seiko applied to its Japanese quartz watches in the late 1970s: above the standard Seiko Quartz, the Lord Quartz offered better-finished cases and better-adjusted calibres, below the King Quartz and Grand Quartz that topped the range. These watches, reserved for the domestic market, were never distributed in Europe — this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market.

Why is the day displayed in Japanese?
Because the day wheel is bilingual: each day appears in kanji and in English, and the language is chosen when setting the crown — an extra half-click switches the display. This was the construction of domestic Seiko from the period, and the kanji in the aperture is proof of the watch’s Japanese origin. You can wear it in English from Monday to Sunday, or in kanji for pleasure.

Is quartz reliable on a watch from this period?
Yes. The Seiko calibres of this generation are robust and simple to maintain: the battery is replaced every two to three years by a watchmaker, with no periodic servicing as on a mechanical movement. This one has been checked, fitted with a new battery, and is guaranteed for one year.

Is the bracelet adjustable?
Yes. The original bracelet closes on a wrist up to 20cm and can be adjusted by removing links, a simple operation for any watchmaker. Its gold-plated brick-pattern checkerwork is complete and supple — the fact that it has stayed with its watch since 1979 is uncommon on these references.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 34mm diameter, 39mm Lug-to-lug, and 8.2mm thickness, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm, the original bracelet closing on 20cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its classic golden round case can be worn by both men and women.
