A case that flips and two watches in one

This Seiko watch was produced in collaboration with Hanae Mori, a Japanese couturière and the first Asian designer admitted to the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris. Seiko handled the manufacturing and movement, while Hanae Mori created the design, with the HM monogram appearing on both dials.

Its distinctive feature lies in the case. Round, gold-plated, 30mm, it flips within its middle case to reveal either of its two sides — each with its own dial and its own bezel. This is not a simple dial reversal but a complete rotating module, which explains why the two sides have nothing in common.

The first side features a white lacquered dial with black Roman numerals, framed by a polished bezel with four visible golden screws. The aesthetic is graphic and crisp. The second side takes the exact opposite approach: a black dial with radiating facets, without a single hour marker, surrounded by a wide bezel on which only the Roman numerals XII, III, VI and IX are engraved in the gold. Day and evening on the same watch.

Inside is a Seiko quartz movement, calibre 2N20, with two hands. No date and no seconds hand: nothing to disturb the design of either dial. Maintenance is limited to a battery change by any watchmaker. The movement of this example has been checked and the battery replaced.

Three points to note

  • Case reversible with two complete sides — each side has its own dial and bezel, giving two watches in a single case.
  • Collaboration between Seiko and Hanae Mori — the manufacturing and movement of a Japanese manufacture under the design of a couturière, signed with the HM monogram.
  • Two opposing aesthetics — white lacquer with Roman numerals on one side, black faceted without hour markers on the other.

Why choose a vintage Seiko watch?

Buying a vintage Seiko watch rather than a new model means gaining access to a leading Japanese manufacture at a controlled budget. Vintage quartz watches from this period are also the easiest to maintain on the pre-owned market: a battery change is enough to get them running again.

This piece holds a distinct place among vintage men's and women's watches: the reversible case is a feature that very few brands have offered in serial production, and it makes it as much an original watch as a dress watch. Its 30mm size makes it equally wearable by both.

Like all our pre-owned Seiko watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: verification of the calibre, examination of the dials, hands, and case. Each vintage Japanese watch we offer comes with a Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Condition and warranty

  • Overall condition: Good state of preservation. Both dials are original and in very fine condition: the white lacquer is immaculate, the black faceted dial retains all its radiance, and the monograms and hands are intact. The gold plating, however, shows pronounced wear scratches on both bezels and on the strap attachments, fully visible in our photographs. The Crystal on the black side shows visible scratches.
  • Water resistance: Not guaranteed (vintage watch). The reversible mechanism puts stress on the case gaskets; we recommend avoiding all contact with water.
  • Authenticity: Lifetime guarantee
  • Mechanics: Quartz movement checked, new battery, guaranteed for 1 year
  • Included: Atelier Victor invoice, protective case
  • Not included: Original box and papers

Frequently asked questions

How does the reversible case work?
The case tilts within its frame to present one or the other of its two sides. Each side has its own dial and its own bezel: it is therefore not a simple reversal of the dial, but a complete module that pivots. The mechanism should be handled gently, as with any watch with a movable case, and it is preferable to do so with the watch removed from the wrist.

Does the watch have one or two movements?
Only one. The two sides do not tell the time at the same time: it is the dial turned upward that is active. The case houses a single quartz movement Seiko, which explains the slimness of the whole and the simplicity of its maintenance.

What is a Seiko Hanae Mori?
This is a Seiko watch created in collaboration with Hanae Mori, a Japanese couturière and the first Asian designer admitted to the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris. Seiko handled its manufacturing and movement, while the couturière designed it. The HM monogram appears on both dials.

Is this watch water-resistant?
No, and we recommend being particularly cautious with this reference. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch, and the reversible mechanism puts more strain on the case gaskets than a fixed construction. Avoid all contact with water, including when washing your hands.

What wrist size is this watch suitable for?
With a 30mm case and 42mm Lug-to-lug, it fits wrists from approximately 15 to 18.5cm. It is a Unisex piece: the white Roman numeral dial for daytime, the minimalist black dial for evening. The Lug width measures 17mm, making it easy to change the strap.
