Atelier Note
A blue herringbone-woven dial, like a fabric caught beneath the Crystal — and a quartz from February 1977, when such precision was still measured as a privilege.
A 1977 Emblem, with a blue dial woven like tweed
This Seiko watch dates from February 1977 — the first decade of quartz. Eight years after the Astron, the technology remained a high-end attribute, and Seiko expressed it in carefully composed dress lines reserved for its Japanese market: the emblem signature, in lowercase English beneath the center of the dial, denotes one of them. These watches circulated very little outside Japan.
The blue dial is what sets it apart: its surface is woven in a herringbone pattern — columns of tight zigzags, as regular as the weave of tweed, giving the deep blue the texture of cloth. Depending on the light, the herringbone pattern comes forward or fades away. The applied baton hour markers, white and faceted, and the three baton hands stand out against it with the clarity of an instrument.
The square brushed steel case frames this fabric with a bezel integrated into the middle case — 30mm across, crisp angles, discreet crown. The design is all of a piece, typical of Japanese shaped watches from the late 1970s.
The original bracelet extends the geometry: its links alternate brushed plates and polished bars in a checkerboard pattern, and it closes at 20cm, adjustable by removing links. The movement is a period Seiko quartz caliber 4120, checked and fitted with a new battery. This watch was produced for the Japanese market — this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market.

Why choose a vintage Seiko from the 1970s?
This vintage Seiko watch holds a precise place among men’s and women’s vintage watches: its 30mm square for 32mm Lug-to-lug can be worn by either, and its textured dial sets it apart from anything the European catalogue offered at the time. The Seiko from the 1970s are the witnesses of the decade when Japan took the lead in global watchmaking — this one bears the exact date.
Like all our vintage quartz watches, this one has been opened and checked by our partner watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and lifetime-guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions
What is the emblem signature?
It is the name of one of the dress lines that Seiko reserved for its Japanese market in the late 1970s, signed in English below the center of the dial. Like many of the house's domestic lines, it remained confidential and scarcely documented outside Japan — this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market. Its rarity in Europe is precisely what makes it so appealing.
What is a chevron dial?
It is a dial whose surface is stamped with columns of tight zigzags, as regular as the weave of tweed or herringbone fabric. From afar, the dial appears to be a solid blue; up close, the texture emerges and gives the blue a textile-like depth, shifting with the light. This finish, demanding to execute evenly, is typical of the care that Seiko devoted to its dials in the 1970s.
Is a quartz watch from 1977 old for a quartz watch?
Yes — and that is what makes this watch a witness. Seiko invented the commercial quartz watch with the Astron in 1969, and during the following decade, the technology remained a high-end attribute, priced accordingly. A Seiko quartz watch from February 1977 belongs to this first generation: its 4120 calibre has been checked and is running, fifty years later.
Is the bracelet adjustable?
Yes. The original checkerboard bracelet closes on a wrist up to 20cm at most and can be adjusted by removing links, a simple operation for any watchmaker. Its links alternate brushed surfaces and polished bars, echoing the geometry of the case — and the fact that it has remained with its watch since 1977 is uncommon.
Is this piece suited to a slim or larger wrist?
At 30mm wide, 32mm Lug-to-lug and 8.3mm thick, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm, the original bracelet closing at 20cm — a reference point, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its compact square carries its presence in its width and slips beneath a cuff.
