Four millimetres thick and a two-tone dial, signed Dolce

This Seiko watch belongs to the Dolce line, created in 1979 for the Japanese market: a dress range whose very purpose was thinness, at a time when quartz allowed Seiko to produce calibres under two millimetres thick. The case of this reference 9520-5140 measures 4mm thick, including the lugs. It disappears beneath a cuff.

The case is rectangular, with cut corners, featuring a stepped bezel that doubles the frame of the dial with a second recessed frame. The metal is gold-plated over a steel back; the lugs, short and straight, extend the case middle without interruption. The crown, also golden, is topped with a dark cabochon.

The dial is the highlight of this watch. It is constructed on two levels: an anthracite frame bearing the applied baton hour markers and a raised Roman numeral XII, and a silver sunburst centre whose radiance changes with the angle of the light. The Seiko Quartz signature occupies the upper part of the centre, while the name Dolce in script sits at the bottom. The golden baton hands are slender.

The movement is a Seiko quartz calibre 9520, with two hands and no seconds hand — a choice consistent with the watch's dress vocation. It has been checked and fitted with a new battery. This watch was produced for Japan and was not distributed in Europe: this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market.

Three points to note

  • 4mm thick — one of the thinnest watches we have offered, designed to slip under a cuff.
  • Two-tone two-level dial — anthracite frame with applied hour markers, silver sunburst centre, raised Roman numeral XII.
  • JDM reference dated August 1984 — produced for Japan, never distributed in Europe.

Why choose a vintage Seiko Dolce?

Buying a vintage Seiko watch from the Japanese market gives access to lines the brand never exported. The Dolce is a perfect example: its thinness and the care devoted to its dials place it well above the image quartz Seiko left in Europe.

This watch holds a distinct place among men's and women's vintage watches: its 25mm by 35mm Lug-to-lug format and its 4mm thickness make it a vintage dress watch that can be worn equally by both.

Like all our vintage quartz watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: movement inspection, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every vintage watch we offer comes with a Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Seiko Dolce line?
Dolce is a dress watch line launched by Seiko in 1979 for the Japanese market, with Exceline as its women's counterpart. Its guiding principle could be summed up in one word: slimness. Seiko housed its thinnest quartz calibres in often gold-plated cases with elaborately designed dials. The line was never officially distributed in Europe, which explains its rarity outside Japan.

How can a watch measure only 4mm thick?
Because the calibre 9520 inside it is a quartz movement measuring less than two millimetres, with no central seconds or date, and Seiko designed the case as closely around it as possible. The mineral Crystal is flat, the steel caseback is slim, and the whole watch slips under a shirt cuff without distorting it. It is a watch you forget you are wearing.

How should a gold-plated case be cared for?
The plating holds up well when two things are avoided: repeated friction against a hard surface — watch strap in metal, countertop, desk edge — and chemicals, perfumes, and solvents. A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for cleaning. In cases of pronounced wear, replating remains possible, but on this watch the plating is even and does not require it.

Is quartz reliable in a forty-year-old watch?
Yes. Seiko quartz calibres from this generation are robust and easy to maintain: the battery is replaced every two to three years by a watchmaker, and the movement does not require periodic servicing like a mechanical one. This one has been checked, fitted with a new battery, and is guaranteed for one year.

What wrist size is this watch suitable for?
At 25mm wide and 35mm Lug-to-lug in length, it is a compact dress format, ideally worn on a slender to medium wrist, where the rectangle retains its proportions and where the 4mm thickness disappears beneath a cuff. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on personal taste and the look sought, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The measurement is only a guide, never a rule.
