A gold-plated Dolce with a Florentine bezel and sand-textured dial

This Seiko watch belongs to the Dolce line, launched in 1979 for the Japanese market as an ultra-thin dress range, the masculine counterpart to the Exceline. Reference 8N40-5010, dated 1988, is a gold-plated variation: a rectangular case with cut corners measuring 27.5mm, with a steel caseback, for 5mm thickness.

What sets it apart from other Dolce watches is the metalwork. The bezel and sides are engine-turned with a fine crosshatch pattern — the Florentine finish, inherited from goldsmithing, which breaks the light into a thousand facets and makes the gold appear deeper than a polished finish. A smooth frame separates this bezel from the dial, and the golden crown is topped with a dark cabochon.

The dial responds to the case with a contrast of textures. A white lacquered frame carries the golden applied baton hour markers and the Roman numerals XII, III, VI and IX, also applied. At the center, a sand-textured square with a fine silvered grain sparkles under the light; it bears the Seiko signature at the top and the name Dolce in script at the bottom. The slender golden baton hands are the only elements to cross both planes.

The movement is a Seiko quartz calibre 8N40, with two hands and no seconds — a choice consistent with the watch's dress vocation. It has been checked and fitted with a new battery. This watch was produced for Japan and was not distributed in Europe: this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market. It is fitted with a black crocodile-pattern leather strap with Buckle steel pin buckle, both later additions.

Three points to note

  • Florentine bezel — a crosshatched guilloché on the bezel and sides, making the gold shimmer.
  • Two-texture dial — white lacquered frame with applied hour markers and Roman numerals, sand-textured square center.
  • Gold-plated and 5mm thick — 1988 JDM reference, never distributed in Europe.

Why choose a vintage Seiko Dolce?

Buying a vintage Seiko watch from the Japanese market gives access to lines the brand never exported. The Dolce is a perfect example: its slimness, and the care devoted to its dials and finishes place it well above the image that Seiko quartz left in Europe.

This watch holds a distinctive place among vintage men's and women's watches: its 27.5mm case, 34mm Lug-to-lug, and 5mm thickness make it a vintage dress watch equally suited to both.

Like all our vintage quartz watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: movement verification, and examination of the dial, hands, and case. Every vintage watch we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Seiko Dolce line?
It is the dress line that Seiko launched in 1979 for its Japanese clientele, built around one idea: housing its thinnest quartz calibers in slim cases, often gold-plated, with carefully executed dials and finishes. Exceline is its feminine counterpart. Dolce was never officially distributed in Europe, where it remains known only to collectors of Seiko.

What is a Florentine finish?
It is a fine crosshatched guilloché, engraved into the metal, derived from Florentine Renaissance goldsmithing. On a watch, it is applied to the bezel and sometimes the sides: the metal ceases to be mirror-like and becomes a surface that diffuses light, softer and deeper. On this Dolce, the bezel and sides are covered with it, and the guilloché is intact.

What is a sandblasted dial center?
It is a finely grained, irregular surface obtained by projection, which glints slightly under the light without ever reflecting like a polished finish. On this watch, the sandblasted central square is surrounded by a white lacquered frame: two textures that echo one another and give depth to an otherwise very restrained dial.

How should a gold-plated case be cared for?
Gold plating holds up well when two things are avoided: repeated rubbing against a hard surface — watch strap in metal, countertop, desk edge — and chemicals, perfumes, and solvents. A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for cleaning; on an engine-turned bezel, avoid rubbing in the direction of the grooves. On this watch, the plating is even and does not require any intervention.

What wrist size is this watch suited to?
At 27.5mm wide and 34mm Lug-to-lug, it is a compact dress format, ideally worn on a slim to medium wrist, where the rectangle retains its proportions and where the 5mm thickness slips easily under a cuff. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on personal taste and the desired look, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The measurement is only a guide, never a rule.
