A round Dolce in steel, with curved lugs and a two-tone dial

This Seiko watch belongs to the Dolce line, launched in 1979 for the Japanese market as an extra-thin dress range, the masculine counterpart to the Exceline. This reference 7741-6030 is a round steel variation, dating from 1988, with a 31.5mm case measuring only 5mm thick.

The design of the case is built around its lugs: long and curved, they extend from the case middle as they spread outward, then taper toward the strap, like handles. The polished round case appears set between them rather than soldered to them. It is a construction that Seiko used only rarely, and it gives this watch the character of a jewel more than that of an instrument.

The dial is composed in two tones: a cream chapter ring bearing black Roman numerals and a railway minute track, and a slightly deeper champagne center, signed Seiko. The name Dolce in script sits at the bottom of the ring. The golden hands, slim and tapered, are accompanied by a central seconds hand, also golden — the color of the hands echoes the cabochon on the crown.

The movement is a Seiko quartz calibre 7741, with three hands, checked and fitted with a new battery. This watch was produced for Japan and was not distributed in Europe: this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market. It is fitted on a black crocodile-style leather strap with Buckle steel pin buckle, both later additions.

Three points to note

  • Curved lugs — long and tapered, they frame the round case and define the design of this reference.
  • Two-tone dial with Roman numerals — cream ring, champagne center, railway track and golden hands.
  • Steel and 5mm thick — a 1988 JDM reference, never distributed in Europe.

Why choose a vintage Seiko Dolce?

Buying a vintage Seiko watch from the Japanese market gives access to lines the brand never exported. The Dolce is a perfect example: its slimness and the care devoted to its dials place it well above the image left in Europe by Seiko quartz.

This watch holds a distinct place among vintage men's and women's watches: its 31.5mm case, 37mm Lug-to-lug, and 5mm thickness make it a vintage dress watch that can be worn equally well by both.

Like all our vintage quartz watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: verification of the movement, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and lifetime guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Seiko Dolce line?
It is the dress line that Seiko created in 1979 for its Japanese clientele, with a simple brief: slim quartz watches with carefully designed dials. The Exceline is its feminine counterpart. Reserved for Japan, the Dolce was never officially distributed in Europe, where it remains little known outside collectors of Seiko.

The dial reads 7741-6040: is that the correct reference?
Yes. At Seiko, the code printed at the bottom of the dial is the code of the dial itself, not that of the watch. The watch reference is engraved on the caseback, here 7741-6030: the first group designates the caliber, the second the case. A discrepancy between the two codes is normal and is found on most Seiko watches from this period.

Why are the lugs shaped like this?
The lugs on this reference are long and curved: they extend outward from the caseband, then taper toward the strap. This design, unusual for Seiko, gives the impression of a round case set between two horns. It also has a practical effect: the watch follows the curve of the wrist and stays well in place, despite its slimness.

Is quartz reliable on a watch from this period?
Yes. Seiko calibers from the late 1980s are robust and easy to maintain: the battery is changed every two to three years by a watchmaker, without periodic servicing as with a mechanical movement. This one has been checked, fitted with a new battery, and is guaranteed for one year.

What wrist size is this watch suitable for?
With a 31.5mm case and 37mm Lug-to-lug, this is the classic dress watch format, ideally worn on a slender to medium wrist, where the curved lugs follow the contour of the wrist and where the 5mm thickness slips under a cuff. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on personal taste and the look sought, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The size is only a guide, never a rule.
