Seiko Dolce two-tone: the ultra-thin rectangular dress watch with a silver dial

This Seiko watch belongs to the Dolce line, the Japanese house's high-end dress collection, and can be worn equally well by a man or a woman. Its rectangular chamfered case, with four bevelled corners, is two-tone: a polished steel case middle enhanced by a gold-plated surround, in an elegant and refined contrast. It measures 25mm wide (27mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 32.5mm and a thickness of just 4.5mm. A piece of extreme slimness, made to slip beneath a cuff.

The silver dial with satin finish is framed by a double border with engraved line detailing that forms a cartouche with cut corners, in perfect harmony with the shape of the case. Free of numerals, it bears only a discreet golden baton marker at 12 o'clock, beneath the SEIKO QUARTZ and Dolce signatures, the latter in cursive script. Two fine golden sword hands mark the time with absolute minimalist elegance.

Inside beats the Seiko 7730 calibre, an ultra-thin dress quartz movement reserved for Dolce watches. It is this slim construction that allows the remarkably flat 4.5mm profile. In practice, maintenance is limited to battery replacement by any watchmaker. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping.

On the wrist, the piece plays the card of the de ville jewel. The two-tone contrast of steel and gold and the silver dial create a dress watch of great sophistication, highlighted here by a black genuine crocodile leather strap. This strap is not original; it is fitted to an original two-tone Buckle. The 19mm Lug width leaves the choice of replacement straps open.

Three points to note

  • The two-tone case, polished steel and gold-plated surround, with cut corners, is the piece's distinctive and elegant hallmark.
  • The satin silver dial, with double engraved border, has a discreet refinement that catches the light beautifully.
  • At 4.5mm thick, it is an ultra-thin watch that slips under a shirt cuff without the slightest inconvenience.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Seiko Dolce line?
The Dolce is the high-end dress watch line of Seiko, developed in the wake of the Grand Quartz models. It combines carefully crafted ultra-thin cases with quality quartz calibres, in a minimalist design intended for de ville wear. It is the Japanese definition of the dress watch, a step above standard collections.

What is a two-tone watch?
A two-tone watch combines two metal tones, here the polished steel of the case middle and the gold plating of the frame. This combination, highly fashionable in the 1980s, brings richness and versatility to the watch, which pairs equally well with Jewelry in golden or silvered tones. It is one of the aesthetic appeals of this Dolce.

Why is this watch so thin?
At only 4.5mm thick, this Dolce is one of the thinnest watches imaginable. This slimness comes from its ultra-thin two-hand quartz calibre and its shaped case. That is what allows it to slip under a shirt cuff without the slightest inconvenience, a quality sought after in a dress watch.

Is this Seiko water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged, and the pressure of the caseback is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, the pool, and the sea. Simple contact with rainwater, however, does not pose any difficulty.

This watch is suitable for what wrist size?
With a case 25mm wide and a Lug-to-lug of 32.5mm, this is ideally a shaped watch in a restrained format, comfortable on a slim to medium wrist and easy to slip under a cuff. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on personal taste and the desired look, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. Size is only a guide, never a rule.
