The high-precision quartz Seiko in a two-tone design from the mid-1980s

This Seiko Chronos watch, reference 9531-5010, produced in 1985, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 27mm rectangular case with cut corners that places it in the dress watch category. The brushed steel of the case interacts with a gold-plated bezel, whose corners feature fine engraved striations. The bracelet, integrated into the case, reprises this two-tone style: steel links punctuated with golden elements, without any visual break between the watch and the wrist.

The silvered dial features a vertical satin finish that catches the light in regular bands. No numerals, no baton markers on the dial itself: four applied dots mark the four cardinal points, echoed by golden markers set on the rehaut. The golden lance-shaped hands are accompanied by a fine seconds hand. The Chronos signature appears in cursive script at six o’clock, beneath the Seiko logo.

Beneath this dial lies the element that distinguishes this piece: the Seiko 9531 caliber, a movement from the brand’s family of high-precision quartz movements. It equipped the upper ranges of the catalog — Dolce, Chronos and Laurel — and directly precedes the caliber used in the first Grand Seiko quartz. The performance highlighted at the time was that announced by Seiko when it was marketed; on a forty-year-old piece, actual rate performance depends on the aging of the movement and its maintenance.

The Chronos line was developed for the Japanese domestic market in the early 1980s and was distributed for only a short decade. These pieces were never marketed in Europe through official channels, which explains their relative rarity outside Japan. At 6.6mm thick and 33mm Lug-to-lug, this one slips under a cuff effortlessly.

Three points to note

  • High-precision 9531 caliber — a movement reserved for the upper ranges of Seiko, inherited from the work carried out on Grand Seiko quartz. The levels originally announced are not guaranteed today on a vintage piece.
  • Japanese line with limited distribution — Chronos existed only between 1980 and around 1988, exclusively on the Japanese domestic market.
  • Original integrated bracelet — the case-bracelet ensemble forms a continuity of design, characteristic of 1980s watchmaking design.

Frequently asked questions

What distinguishes the 9531 caliber from a classic Seiko quartz?

The 9531 caliber belongs to the family of high-precision quartz movements from Seiko, developed for the upper ranges of the catalogue and at the origin of the movements that would equip the first Grand Seiko quartz. The performance highlighted at its release was markedly above that of a standard quartz from the same period. These are the original announced specifications: on a vintage piece, the observed timekeeping depends on the age of the movement and its maintenance.

What year does this piece date from?

It was produced in 1985, placing it at the heart of the Chronos period. The dating is based on the serial number engraved on the caseback, which indicates the year and month of production according to the Seiko coding system. The reference 9531-5010 appears at the bottom of the dial.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?

With a width of 27mm, a Lug-to-lug of 33mm, and a thickness of 6.6mm, it suits wrists of approximately 14 to 19cm. Its compact format and slimness place it in the dress watch category, equally wearable by a man or a woman. The bracelet measures 20cm and remains adjustable by removing links.

Is the bracelet original?

Yes. The two-tone bracelet is the one delivered with the watch, integrated into the case — it is not an interchangeable bracelet with standard lugs. The Lug width measures 17mm. Its length can be adjusted by a watchmaker, and we can take care of this before shipping if you let us know your wrist size.

Is the watch water-resistant?

Water resistance is not guaranteed on a vintage piece. The original gaskets have aged, and we do not carry out pressure tests, as these could damage the case. We recommend avoiding any prolonged contact with water, including when washing your hands.
