Seiko gold-plated Big Ben: the watch paying tribute to the Westminster clock, enamelled dial and engraved case

This Seiko watch is a piece of true watchmaking whimsy: a miniature tribute to Big Ben, the famous clock on the Westminster tower in London. Unisex, it can be worn equally well by a man or a woman who appreciates unusual objects. Its square gold-plated case is entirely engraved with neo-Gothic motifs — arches, quatrefoils and interlacing — evoking the worked stone of the tower. It measures 25mm (26.5mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 33.5mm and a thickness of only 5.3mm. A small architectural tableau on the wrist.

The dial is the heart of the piece: a faithful reproduction of the famous church clock dial. White background with the look of crackled antique enamel, black Roman numerals, double railway minute track with a Gothic design, and superb wrought-iron-style hands with fleur-de-lis motifs: everything evokes the Great Clock of Westminster reduced to wrist scale. A dial of rare richness, a world away from the ordinary dress watch.

Inside beats a Seiko quartz movement, calibre 5P30, extra-thin. In practice, maintenance is limited to a battery change by any watchmaker. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before dispatch. It is a watch that favours the pleasure of the object and the finesse of the design over mechanical complication.

On the wrist, the piece looks like no other. The engraved case, the clock dial and the Gothic hands create a set full of character and spirit, both vintage and timeless. It is fitted with an original brown genuine crocodile leather strap with Buckle buckle. The 19mm Lug width leaves the choice of replacement straps open.

Three points to note

  • The watch is a tribute to Big Ben: a dial faithful to the Westminster clock and a case engraved with neo-Gothic motifs, a collectible piece apart.
  • The dial imitates the crackled antique enamel of church clocks, a rare and very carefully executed aesthetic detail.
  • The case is gold-plated, not solid gold: it shows light marks from use, noted in full transparency.

Frequently asked questions

What is this Seiko “Big Ben” watch?
It is a Seiko fashion watch designed as a tribute to Big Ben, the famous clock on the Westminster tower in London. Its dial faithfully reproduces that of the clock tower, and its gold-plated case is engraved with neo-Gothic motifs recalling the tower's architecture. It is an original and sought-after piece, as much a curiosity object as a watch.

Why does the dial have a cracked appearance?
This appearance is intentional: it imitates the old enamel of clock tower dials, whose surface cracks over time. This detail, called a crackled or faience effect, reinforces the realism and charm of this tribute to Big Ben. It is part of the original design and not a defect.

Is the case made of solid gold?
No: it is a gold-plated case with a steel back, engraved with its neo-Gothic motifs. The plating brings the warmth and sheen of gold for a fraction of its price. This piece shows fine marks of wear on its plating, noted transparently.

Is this Seiko water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged and the caseback pressure is no longer what it was on the first day. Avoid the shower, swimming pool and sea. Simple contact with rainwater, however, does not cause any difficulty.

What wrist size is this watch suited to?
With a 25 mm square case and a 33.5 mm Lug-to-lug, it is ideally a piece with restrained, dressy proportions, with great refinement. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on personal taste and the look sought, it can be worn equally well by a man or a woman who appreciates original pieces full of character. The sizing is only a guide, never a rule.
