A 1997 Avenue with its numerals on the bezel
This Seiko watch overturns the usual construction of a dial. The Arabic numerals are not printed in the center: they are embossed in relief on the bezel, broad and sloping, tone-on-tone in anthracite metal. At the center, the dial is reduced to a white medallion encircled by a railway minute track, where two dark hands point toward the bezel numerals. Time is read through the gesture of the hand, as on a sundial.
This reference 2P20-0560 belongs to the Avenue line, which Seiko developed in the 1990s for its Japanese market under the signature For The New Being, printed on the dial: dress watches that allowed themselves designs unknown to the international catalog. This one, dated 1997, is among the most radical.
The round case, in steel with a matte anthracite finish, measures 31mm with a 5mm thickness, with no visible lugs: the original mesh bracelet, woven in black and steel, attaches in line with the case and extends its color. The crown, tiny, recedes into the profile. The whole is worn like an object in a single piece.
The movement is a quartz Seiko caliber 2P20, with two hands, checked and fitted with a new battery. This watch was produced for Japan and was not distributed in Europe: this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market.

Frequently asked questions
How do you read the time on this watch?
Exactly as on a classic watch: the two hands start from the center, and you follow their direction to the numerals — except that these are stamped on the bezel rather than printed on the dial. The railway minute track on the central disc refines the reading of the minutes. After a few hours on the wrist, the gesture becomes as natural as on any watch.
What does “For The New Being” mean?
It is the signature of the Avenue line by Seiko in the 1990s, printed beneath the name on the dial. The line brought together dress watches designed for the Japanese market, some of which, like this one, took liberties that the international catalog of Seiko did not allow itself. Today, this motto is a sought-after marker among enthusiasts of Japanese watch design.
The dial reads 2P20-2210: is that the correct reference?
Yes. At Seiko, the code printed at the bottom of the dial is the dial's own code, not the watch's. The watch reference is engraved on the caseback, here 2P20-0560: the first group designates the caliber, the second the case. A difference between the two codes is normal and is found on most Seiko from this period.
Is the mesh bracelet original?
Yes, and it is part of the design: woven from black and steel links, it echoes the two-tone treatment of the case and attaches on its axis, with no visible lugs. It can be adjusted up to a 19cm wrist circumference. A replacement bracelet would cause this watch to lose part of its identity; this one is complete and supple.
What wrist size is this watch suited to?
With a 31mm diameter and 34mm Lug-to-lug, it is a compact format whose wide bezel gives it a stronger presence, ideally worn on a slim to medium wrist, where the lugless case and its bracelet aligned with it form a continuous bracelet.
