Atelier Note

A sub-seconds turning at six o’clock, Roman numerals and feuille hands — the spirit of a pocket watch, laid into five and a half millimetres of gold.

An Avenue with sub-seconds, the pocket watch on the wrist

This Seiko watch is an Avenue, reference 2K23-6070, dated 1999 — the dress line that Seiko designed in the 1990s for the classical register, as a counterpoint to its technical ranges. This example is its most accomplished expression: a watch that borrows its entire vocabulary from the pocket watch.

The white dial unfolds its codes: twelve slender black Roman numerals, a railway minute track, two tapered feuille hands — and above all a sub-seconds at six o’clock, that separate register where the seconds hand turns on its own silvered circle. On a quartz watch, sub-seconds is a rarity: it requires a dedicated calibre, which Seiko developed for this line.

The round golden case, with tapered lugs and a slim bezel, measures only 5.5mm thick — the watch slips under a cuff and disappears from notice. The fluted crown is original.

The Seiko 2K23 quartz calibre has been checked and is guaranteed for one year. The watch comes with its original papers, unsigned — a rarity on these references — and is fitted with a black leather strap with white stitching.

Three points to note

01

Sub-seconds at six o’clock — the separate register of pocket watches, rare on a quartz calibre.

02

5.5mm thick — one of Seiko’s finest dress watches, beneath Roman numerals and feuille hands.

03

Original papers included — unsigned, they have accompanied the watch since 1999.

Why choose a vintage Seiko Avenue?

This vintage Seiko watch holds a precise place among men’s and women’s vintage watches: its 34mm case with 32.5mm of Lug-to-lug can be worn equally by either, and its sub-seconds sets it apart from all the three-hand dress watches of its generation. It is the quintessential dress watch — Roman numerals, slimness, restraint — signed by a first-rank manufacture, at an entry-level budget.

Like all our vintage quartz watches, this one has been opened and checked by our partner watchmakers: verification of the movement, examination of the dial, hands and case. Each vintage watch that we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and lifetime guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sub-seconds display?
It is a separate register, here at six o'clock, where the seconds hand turns on its own circle instead of a central seconds hand — the architecture of pocket watches, which wristwatches inherited before the central seconds hand became standard. On a quartz watch, it is rare: it requires a calibre built specifically for it, and gives the dial a rhythm that the classic three hands do not have.

What is the Seiko Avenue line?
It is the dress line that Seiko produced in the 1990s: slim, classic watches — Roman numerals, white dials, golden or steel cases — conceived as a counterpoint to the house's technical ranges. A discreet line and now discontinued, it offers the most accessible entry into the dress register of Seiko.

The dial indicates 2K23-6160: is that the correct reference?
Yes. At Seiko, the code printed at the bottom of the dial is that of the dial itself, not that of the watch. The watch reference is engraved on the caseback, here 2K23-6070: the first group designates the calibre, the second the case. A discrepancy between the two codes is normal and is found on most Seiko.

What do the original papers include?
The documents supplied by Seiko at the time of sale, kept with the watch ever since — unsigned by the period retailer, which is common. They accompany the piece in addition to the Atelier Victor invoice, which serves as a certificate of authenticity and activates the one-year guarantee. Finding a Seiko from this generation with its papers is uncommon.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 34mm diameter, 32.5mm Lug-to-lug, and 5.5mm thickness, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its very short lugs make it wear compactly, and its slimness lets it slip under any cuff. The Lug width measures 13mm.
