A Seiko Avenue gold-plated watch, with a white dial and feuille hands

This Seiko watch belongs to the Avenue line, which the brand offered around the turn of the 1990s, mainly in Japan: classic-design quartz dress watches with highly legible dials. Reference 5P31-6D00, dated 1990, is a round gold-plated version over a steel base, measuring 31.5mm with a 5.5mm thickness.

The case is polished, with a slim bezel and long, tapered lugs that extend the middle case while narrowing toward the strap. The crown, golden and fluted, is discreet. The whole has the restraint of a pocket watch transposed to the wrist — and that is precisely the register of the dial.

The lacquered white dial features black Arabic numerals, well drawn, and a railway minute track around the edge. The black feuille hands, with the rounded shape of antique watches, are effortlessly legible; the central seconds hand, golden, provides the only touch of colour. The name Avenue and its stylised A occupy the upper part of the dial, while the Seiko signature sits at the bottom.

The movement is a Seiko quartz calibre 5P31, three-hand, checked and fitted with a new battery. This watch was produced for Japan and was never distributed in Europe: this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market. It is fitted on a black crocodile-pattern leather strap with a later steel Buckle pin buckle, both later additions.

Three points to note

  • White dial with Arabic numerals — railway minute track and black feuille hands, with the legibility of a pocket watch.
  • Gold-plated and 5.5mm thick — polished round case, long and tapered lugs.
  • 1990 JDM reference — produced for Japan, never distributed in Europe.

Why choose a vintage Seiko from the Japanese market?

Buying a vintage Seiko watch from the Japanese market gives access to lines the brand never exported. The Avenue is a perfect example: a classic design, a carefully executed dial, and a slenderness that the European Seiko catalogue did not offer at the time.

This watch holds a distinctive place among men’s and women’s vintage watches: its 31.5mm case, 36.5mm Lug-to-lug, and 5.5mm thickness make it a vintage dress watch that can be worn equally well by either.

Like all our vintage quartz watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: movement inspection, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Every vintage watch we offer comes with a Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and lifetime-guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is Seiko Avenue?
Avenue is a line of dress watches that Seiko offered around the turn of the 1990s, mainly on its Japanese market. The name appears at the top of the dial with a stylized A. Its watches use a classical vocabulary — white dials, Arabic or Roman numerals, leaf hands, slim cases often gold-plated — with quartz calibers. The line was not distributed in Europe, where it remains known only to collectors of Seiko.

The dial reads 5P31-6E80: is that the correct reference?
Yes. At Seiko, the code printed at the bottom of the dial is that of the dial itself, not that of the watch. The watch reference is engraved on the caseback, here 5P31-6D00: the first group designates the caliber, the second the case. A difference between the two codes is normal and is found on most Seiko from this period.

What is a leaf hand?
It is a hand whose body widens and then tapers to a point, like a tree leaf. This design comes from nineteenth-century pocket watches and remains associated with dials with Arabic or Roman numerals. In black on a white dial, it provides immediate legibility and an antique character that baton hands do not have. On this watch, both leaf hands are original.

How should a gold-plated case be cared for?
The plating holds up well when two things are avoided: repeated rubbing against a hard surface — watch strap in metal, countertop, desk edge — and chemicals, perfumes, and solvents. A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for cleaning. On this watch, the plating shows a few signs of wear that we note; it remains even on the case middle.

What wrist size is this watch suited to?
With a 31.5mm case and 36.5mm Lug-to-lug, this is the classic dress watch format, ideally worn on a slim to medium wrist, where the tapered lugs follow the curve of the wrist and where the 5.5mm thickness slips under a cuff. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on personal taste and the desired look, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The measurement is only a guide, never a rule.
