Seiko gold-plated: the cushion dress watch with a refined white dial

This Seiko watch is a cushion-shaped dress watch, unisex, worn equally well by a man or a woman. Its gold-plated cushion case, square with very rounded corners and curved sides, embodies the soft, warm elegance of the Seiko design from the late 1980s. It measures 33mm (34.7mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 36mm and a thickness of only 6.1mm. A slim and refined piece, made to slip under a cuff.

The lacquered white dial is of absolute purity. Nothing disturbs its immaculate surface, save for fine gold applied baton hour markers that mark its perimeter and the SEIKO and QUARTZ signatures, accompanied by the small Seiko QZ logo. Two fine gold baton hands and a discreet black seconds hand sweep across the whole, in a design of great restraint, a sharp contrast of gold against white.

Inside beats the Seiko 7820 calibre, an extra-thin dress quartz movement. Its slim construction allows the watch's 6.1mm profile. In practice, maintenance is limited to battery replacement by any watchmaker. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping.

On the wrist, the piece plays the card of timeless classicism. The warm gold-plating and the refined white dial create a luminous and elegant whole, highlighted here by a black lizard-style leather. This strap is not original; it is fitted with a steel Buckle. The 20mm Lug width leaves the choice of replacement straps open.

Three points to note

  • The fully refined white dial, with only gold hour markers, embodies the classicism of the dress watch: understated and luminous.
  • At 6.1mm thick, it is an extra-thin watch, slipping under a shirt cuff without the slightest inconvenience.
  • The case is gold-plated, not solid: it shows light signs of wear, indicated with complete transparency.

Frequently asked questions

What is a “cushion” case?
A cushion case is a square case with very rounded corners, evoking the shape of a cushion. It softens the strictness of the square while retaining a structured and elegant appearance. It is a classic shape in watchmaking, which gives this Seiko its timeless character.

Is the Seiko 7820 calibre reliable?
Yes. The 7820 is an extra-thin dress quartz movement, renowned for its reliability. Its maintenance is very simple: a battery change by any watchmaker is sufficient. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and is guaranteed for 1 year.

Is the case solid gold?
No: it is a gold-plated case with a steel back, a common construction on Seiko dress watches. The plating brings the warmth and brilliance of gold for a fraction of its price. This piece shows fine signs of wear on its plating, disclosed in full transparency.

Is this Seiko water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged, and the pressure of the caseback is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, the pool, and the sea. Simple contact with rainwater, however, does not pose any difficulty.

What wrist size does this watch suit?
With a 33mm cushion case and a 36mm Lug-to-lug, it is ideally a shaped watch in a restrained format, comfortable on a slim to medium wrist and easy to slip under a cuff. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on taste and the desired look, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The size is only a guide, never a rule.
