Seiko steel: the cushion-shaped dress watch with silver linen dial

This Seiko watch is a cushion-shaped dress watch, unisex, worn equally well by a man or a woman. Its polished steel cushion case, square with very rounded corners and curved sides, embodies the soft elegance of Seiko design at the turn of the 1980s. It measures 30mm (32.3mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 36.7mm and a thickness of just 5.3mm. A slim and refined piece, made to slip under a cuff.

The silver dial reveals a beautiful linen texture, a fine crosshatched weave that catches the light in a silky grid and gives the piece all its depth. Applied faceted baton markers punctuate its perimeter, beneath the SEIKO and QUARTZ signatures, accompanied by the small Seiko QZ logo. Two slim blackened baton hands and a matching seconds hand sweep across the whole, in the purest dress watch spirit.

Inside beats the Seiko calibre 6030, an extra-flat three-hand dress quartz movement, one of the brand's first dress quartz movements. Its slim construction allows the watch's 5.3mm profile. In practice, servicing is limited to a battery change by any watchmaker. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping.

On the wrist, the piece plays the timeless classic card. The polished steel cushion case and the silver linen dial create an ensemble of great clarity, highlighted here by a black crocodile-style leather. This strap is not original; it is fitted with a steel Buckle. The 19mm Lug width leaves the choice of replacement straps wide open.

Three points to note

  • The silver dial with linen texture is the true refinement of the piece: a silky weave that changes with the light.
  • At 5.3mm thick, it is an extra-flat watch, slipping under a shirt cuff without the slightest inconvenience.
  • The dial shows a few fine marks and light signs of age, consistent with the age of the piece. We prefer to mention this rather than embellish it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a “linen” dial?
A linen dial refers to a finish with a fine crosshatch pattern, reminiscent of linen weaving. This texture catches the light in a silky, shifting grid, bringing discreet depth to the dial. It is a refinement much appreciated on dress watches from the 1970s and 1980s.

What is a “cushion” case?
A cushion case is a square case with very rounded corners, evoking the shape of a cushion. It softens the strictness of the square while retaining a structured and elegant appearance. It is a classic form in watchmaking, which gives this Seiko its timeless character.

Is the case steel or plated?
The case is steel, a durable and resistant material that retains its brilliance over time. Unlike gold-plating, steel does not present any risk of plating wear: it is a robust and understated choice, perfectly suited to a dress watch intended for daily use.

Is this Seiko water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged, and the caseback pressure is no longer what it was on the first day. Avoid the shower, the swimming pool, and the sea. Simple contact with rainwater, however, does not pose any difficulty.

What wrist does this watch suit?
With a 30mm cushion case and a Lug-to-lug of 36.7mm, it is ideally a shaped watch in a measured format, comfortable on a slim to medium wrist and easy to slip under a cuff. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on taste and the desired look, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The guideline is only a reference, never a rule.
