Atelier Note
A black lacquer where only a single gold numeral survives, encircled by a bezel cut like the edge of a coin — 5 millimeters thick, and nothing to take away.
A Seiko in gold and black from 1982, with a coin-edge bezel
This Seiko watch, reference 6020-7060, dates from April 1982 — the height of the period when Seiko was rendering its quartz in dress watches of a refinement Europe was only just discovering. This one plays a single card, and plays it fully: gold on black.
The black lacquer dial bears only one numeral: a gold-tone Roman XII, elongated, alone at the top — the other hours are reduced to fine baton indexes incised into the lacquer, almost invisible until the light finds them. The signatures SEIKO QUARTZ and the house emblem appear in gold lettering, beneath two gold-tone leaf hands. Nothing else crosses the black.
The fluted bezel defines the character of the piece: a striated surround like the edge of a coin, catching the light in rays — the “coin edge” motif of classic dress watches, executed here with a goldsmith’s sharpness. The hook lugs, curved and open, grasp the strap like claws.
Everything fits within 5.2mm thickness — one of the thinnest watches in our catalogue. The Seiko 6020 quartz calibre, with two hands, has been checked and fitted with a new battery; it is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted with a later black crocodile-pattern leather strap.
Three points to note
01
A single gold numeral — the Roman XII, alone at the top of the black lacquer, with the hours in incised markers.
02
Fluted bezel — the coin edge that encircles the black and catches the light in rays.
03
5.2mm thick — one of the thinnest in the catalogue, it disappears beneath a cuff.
Why choose a vintage Seiko dress watch?
This vintage Seiko watch holds a precise place among men’s and women’s vintage watches: its 30.5mm case for 35mm of Lug-to-lug can be worn by either, as an evening piece or for everyday formal wear. The gold-and-black Seiko watches of the 1980s offer the vocabulary of the great Swiss dress watches — lacquer, gold, slenderness — at a budget with no European equivalent.
Like all our vintage quartz watches , this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands and case. Each vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and lifetime-guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions
Why only one numeral on the dial?
By design choice: against the black lacquer, the gold XII anchors the top of the dial, while the other hours are reduced to fine incised strokes that the light reveals. This is the language of the great dress watches of the 1980s — the dial can be read at a glance from the position of the hands, and the black remains almost untouched. A radical design for its time, now highly sought-after once again.
What is a fluted bezel?
It is a bezel grooved with fine radiating flutes, like the edge of a coin — the "coin edge" motif in watchmaking vocabulary. It frames the dial with a ring that catches the light in successive flashes with every movement of the wrist, and gives a restrained watch its only ornament. This one is crisp, its grooves sharp.
The dial reads 6020-7170: is this the correct reference?
Yes. At Seiko, the code printed at the bottom of the dial is that of the dial itself, not that of the watch. The watch reference is engraved on the caseback, here 6020-7060: the first group designates the caliber, the second the case. A discrepancy between the two codes is normal and is found on most Seiko.
Is quartz reliable on a watch from this period?
Yes. Seiko calibers from the 1980s are robust and easy to maintain: the battery is changed every two to three years by a watchmaker, with no periodic servicing as on a mechanical watch. This one has been checked, fitted with a new battery, and is guaranteed for one year. Its two-hand construction, without a seconds hand, contributes to the watch's slimness.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
At 30.5mm in diameter, 35mm Lug-to-lug and 5.2mm thick, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 18cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its extreme slimness places it firmly in the dress watch category, and it can be worn by both a man and a woman. The Lug width measures 17mm, making it easy to change the strap.
