Seiko gold-plated: the tonneau dress watch with white Roman dial and cabochon crown

This Seiko watch is a tonneau-shaped dress watch, unisex, worn equally well by a man or a woman. Its gold-plated case, with its vertical silhouette and delicately curved sides, embodies the elegance of the shaped watch. It measures 27mm wide (29mm with the crown) with a Lug-to-lug of 35mm and a thickness of only 5.7mm. An extra-flat and refined piece, made to slip under a cuff.

The white lacquered dial is of understated classicism. Fine black Roman numerals circle it, framed by a double railway minute track that forms an elegant cartouche, in the purest dress watch spirit. The SEIKO signature sits at the top of the dial. Two fine blackened baton hands and a discreet golden seconds hand sweep across the whole, with perfect restraint and legibility.

Inside beats the Seiko 5P31 calibre, an extra-flat three-hand dress quartz movement. Its slim construction allows the watch's 5.7mm profile. In practice, servicing is limited to battery replacement by any watchmaker. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping.

On the wrist, the piece plays the card of timeless classicism. The warm gold-plating, the white Roman dial and the black cabochon crown create a dress watch of great elegance, highlighted here by a black genuine crocodile leather strap. This strap is not original. The 19mm Lug width leaves the choice of replacement straps wide open.

Three points to note

  • The white Roman numeral dial, framed by a double railway track, embodies the classicism of the dress watch: understated and perfectly legible.
  • The crown is adorned with a black cabochon, a dress detail that enhances the whole.
  • The case is gold-plated, not solid: it shows light signs of wear, noted with full transparency.

Frequently asked questions

What is a "tonneau" case?
The tonneau, or "barrel," case is a shaped case whose sides are curved and slightly domed, like the staves of a tonneau, in a silhouette taller than it is wide. It is a classic and elegant shape in dress watchmaking, which sits beautifully on the wrist and gives this Seiko its timeless character.

Is the Seiko 5P31 caliber reliable?
Yes. The 5P31 is an ultra-thin three-hand dress quartz movement, renowned for its reliability. Its maintenance is extremely simple: a battery change by any watchmaker is sufficient. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and is guaranteed for 1 year.

Is the case solid gold?
No: it is a gold-plated case with a steel back, a technique commonly used on Seiko dress watches. The plating brings the warmth and brilliance of gold for a fraction of its price. This piece shows light signs of wear on its plating, disclosed with complete transparency.

Is this Seiko water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged and the back pressure is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, pool, and sea. Simple contact with rainwater, however, does not present any difficulty.

For what wrist does this watch suit?
With a tonneau case 27mm wide and a Lug-to-lug of 35mm, it is ideally a shaped watch in a measured format, comfortable on a slim to medium wrist and easy to slip under a cuff. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on taste and the look sought, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. Size is only a guide, never a rule.
