Seiko Tank gold-plated: the rectangular Art Deco dress watch with black dial and small seconds

This Seiko watch is a rectangular-shaped watch with resolutely Art Deco charm, unisex, worn equally well by a man or a woman. Its stepped gold-plated case, whose middle case rises in successive tiers toward the Crystal, evokes the graphic elegance of the 1930s. It measures 24.5mm wide (26mm with the crown) with a Lug-to-lug of 35mm and a thickness of 7.1mm. An elegant and refined piece, made to slip under a cuff.

The black lacquered dial is a small masterpiece of style. Generous golden Roman numerals circle it, framed by a double gold-line border that forms a central cartouche, in the purest Art Deco spirit. A golden small seconds, at 6 o'clock, turns within a guilloché subdial and marks the refinement of the piece. The SEIKO and QUARTZ signatures, also in gold, stand out elegantly against the deep black. The golden sword hands complete this highly sophisticated ensemble.

Inside beats the Seiko 2628 calibre, a dress quartz movement with small seconds. In practice, servicing is limited to battery replacement by any watchmaker. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping. It is the choice of precision and simplicity, serving a dial of great elegance.

On the wrist, the piece plays the card of the retro de ville jewel. The warm gold-plating, the black and gold dial, and the stepped shape create a dress watch with strong character, in the spirit of the great classic shaped watches. It is fitted with a black crocodile-style leather strap, with a Buckle buckle. This strap is not original. The 19mm Lug width leaves the choice of replacement straps open.

Three points to note

  • The black dial with golden Roman numerals and small seconds, framed by a double line, is a superb tribute to the Art Deco style of the 1930s.
  • The stepped gold-plated case (stepped case) is a sought-after graphic design, with its middle case rising toward the Crystal.
  • The case is gold-plated, not solid: it shows light signs of wear, disclosed with complete transparency.

Frequently asked questions

Is this rectangular-shaped watch a Cartier?
No. It is an authentic Seiko, signed on its dial. Rectangular-shaped watches belong to the common vocabulary of dress watchmaking, adopted by many houses throughout the 20th century, particularly during the Art Deco period. This piece claims to be nothing other than what it is: an elegant and refined shaped watch, at a price incomparable to that of a luxury piece, and its brand authenticity is guaranteed for life by Atelier Victor.

What is a "stepped" case or stepped case?
It is a case whose middle case rises in several successive levels, or steps, as it moves up toward the Crystal. This design, emblematic of 1930s Art Deco style, gives the watch graphic depth and architectural elegance. It is particularly sought-after on shaped watches.

What is a small seconds?
The small seconds is a seconds display housed in a distinct subdial, here at 6 o'clock, rather than in the center of the dial. It is a traditional and elegant layout, inherited from antique watches, which brings a touch of classic refinement. On this Seiko, it is perfectly functional and fully contributes to the Art Deco charm of the piece.

Is the case made of solid gold?
No: it is a gold-plated case with a steel back, a technique commonly used on Seiko dress watches. The plating provides the warmth and brilliance of gold for a fraction of its price. This piece shows light signs of wear on its plating, disclosed with complete transparency.

What wrist does this watch suit?
With a case 24.5mm wide and a Lug-to-lug of 35mm, this is ideally a shaped watch in a restrained format, comfortable on a slim to medium wrist and easy to slip under a cuff. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on taste and the look sought, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. Estimated size is only a guide, never a rule.
