Atelier Note
A black lacquer that sixty years have strewn with frost — collectors call it stardust, dust of stars, and no other dial bears quite this sky.
A 1969 Oysterdate, with a black star-studded dial
This Rolex watch is an Oysterdate Precision, reference 6694, produced in 1969 — the model through which generations of collectors entered the world of vintage Rolex: the Oyster case, the signed screw-down crown, the date under a Cyclops, in the simplest construction the house ever produced.
The original black dial is what defines this example. Over the decades, its lacquer has developed a stardust patina — “dust of stars”: a constellation of frosted specks spread across the entire black surface, born of the natural aging of the lacquer and impossible to reproduce. Each stardust dial draws its own sky; this one is even, dense, and collectors seek out precisely these examples. The applied baton hour markers retain their cream-patinated tritium plots, in harmony with the original baton hands.
The Oyster case in steel, measuring 34mm, bears its smooth domed bezel and its signed Rolex screw-down crown, which locks onto the tube — the construction that made the house’s reputation. The date window at three o’clock is magnified by the Cyclops of the acrylic Crystal.
The Precision designation refers to the hand-wound version: the Rolex calibre 1225, renowned for its robustness, which is wound each morning with a simple gesture. This one has been checked by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted on a new black leather strap, with Buckle buckle — an original Rolex Buckle is available on request.
Three points to note
01
Black stardust dial — a constellation born over time in the original lacquer, unique to this example.
02
Case Oyster with screw-down crown — Rolex’s foundational construction, in 34mm from 1969.
03
Original tritium — cream-patinated markers and hands, all of one piece with the dial.
Why choose a vintage Rolex Oysterdate?
This pre-owned Rolex watch holds a precise place among men’s and women’s vintage watches: the 6694 is the classic gateway to vintage Rolex — the Oyster case, the signed crown and the brand’s craftsmanship, in a 34mm size that can be worn equally by him or her, at a budget unrelated to sporty references. A stardust dial elevates it to another category: this is the kind of piece you do not come across twice.
Like all our vintage mechanical watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every vintage Rolex watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty and lifetime guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions
What is a stardust dial?
This is the name collectors give to black lacquered dials whose surface has become speckled with fine light dots over the decades — a “stardust” born of the natural aging of the lacquer, something that cannot be artificially reproduced. Each stardust dial evolves along its own path: this one is dense and even. Far from being dismissed, these dials are actively sought after — it is a patina born of time, on an authentic dial that has never been restored.
What does “Precision” mean on the dial?
It is the designation Rolex used on its hand-wound models that were not chronometer-certified — as opposed to automatic Perpetual models. The 6694 is the brand’s last major hand-wound reference: its caliber 1225 is wound each morning with around twenty turns of the crown, a simple gesture that is enough for the day. It is Rolex mechanics in their most direct expression.
Is the tritium still active?
No. The tritium on the hour markers and hands, indicated by the T SWISS T marking at the bottom of the dial, ceased to be luminescent decades ago — its radioactive half-life is around twelve years, and it is now inert and harmless. What remains is its creamy patina, uniform between dial and hands: proof that the set is original and has never been mismatched.
What is the screw-down crown for?
It screws onto a tube fixed to the case, like a cap, instead of simply being pushed into it: this is the principle of the Oyster case, which built Rolex’s reputation for water resistance. On a vintage watch, the original water resistance can no longer be guaranteed, but the construction retains its robustness. To wind the watch, unscrew the crown, turn it gently, then screw it back down.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 34mm diameter, 41.5mm Lug-to-lug, and 10.9mm thickness, it suits wrists from approximately 15 to 19cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. It is the classic Oyster format, whose full proportions wear larger than the measurements suggest. The Lug width measures 19mm, making it easy to change the strap.
