This Omega reference 2576-4 belongs to the house’s earliest automatic bumper watches, those that collectors sometimes call “pre-Seamaster”: reference 2576, with sub-seconds, is one of the two founding references of the Seamaster launched in 1948 for Omega’s centenary, alongside its sister reference 2577 with central seconds, and the earliest dials do not yet bear the name. Its movement is a bumper: an oscillating weight that travels in an arc and rebounds on two stops instead of turning, Omega’s solution before the full rotor of 1955. The so-called Fab. Suisse dial, the designation reserved for watches sold in France. A automatic watch in steel, 34mm, from 1947, with the slender lugs of the earliest series.
Its original silvered dial shows a light patina, specific to this example. Three applied Arabic numerals at 12, 3 and 9, nine applied steel arrow markers, four patinated luminous dots on the minute track, and at six o’clock a guilloché sub-seconds register with concentric circles. Two original dauphine hands with black centers. The Ω, Omega Automatic, Fab. Suisse beneath 12.
The steel 34mm case, 41.8mm Lug-to-lug and 10.5mm thick, features a wide polished bezel and slender lugs, those of the earliest series, with a steel caseback, an original steel crown and an acrylic Crystal. The automatic bumper movement was serviced in 2024 by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted on a later brown leather strap with white stitching, with a vintage steel Buckle Omega pin buckle.

Frequently asked questions
What is a bumper automatic?
Omega's first automatic system, produced from 1943 to 1955: instead of a rotor turning through 360 degrees, an oscillating weight travels along an arc of around 270 degrees and bounces against two spring stops, hence the name. You can sometimes feel this slight bounce on the wrist. The full rotor, more efficient, replaced it from 1955 onward, with caliber 471.
Why "pre-Seamaster"?
It is a collectors' nickname for Omega bumper automatics from the late 1940s, whose dial does not bear the name Seamaster: the line was launched in 1948, and its first references, the 2576 with sub-seconds and the 2577 with center seconds, were initially signed Omega Automatic only. This one is a 2576.
What does Fab. Suisse mean?
Swiss manufacture: the wording Swiss watches bore for the French market, instead of Swiss Made, because of the import rules of the time. A Fab. Suisse dial indicates a watch sold new in France.
Is the dial original?
Yes, and it has never been restored: its light patina was created by time, its applied numerals and indexes and its dauphine hands are those of the watch. The four luminous dots on the minute track have taken on the hue of time.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 34mm diameter, 41.8mm Lug-to-lug and 10.5mm thickness, it suits wrists of around 15 to 19cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its wide bezel gives it more presence on the wrist than its diameter suggests. The Lug width measures 18mm, which makes it easy to change the strap.
