A 1960 Seamaster with a monobloc case
This Omega watch is an Seamaster, reference 14740.1.SC, produced around 1960. The Seamaster is the eldest of the Omega lines still alive today: born in 1948, the direct heir to the waterproof watches the house supplied during the war, it was the parent line from which the De Ville branched off in 1967 — to wear a Seamaster from this period is to wear the rootstock.
Its monobloc case makes it as much a technical piece as a classic one: the case middle is carved from a single block of steel, with no separate caseback — the movement is removed through the Crystal. This is the construction Omega used to ensure period water resistance, and the signature of the SC references from those years.
The silver-grey sunburst dial radiates from the centre — a steel-toned shade more subdued than bright silver, changing with the light — beneath golden applied baton hour markers, three golden hands and a date window at three o'clock: the grey-and-gold contrast that defined Omega watches at the turn of the 1960s. It bears the patina and fine marks of its sixty-five years, visible in our photographs: an original dial, never restored.
The Omega calibre 610, a hand-wound mechanical movement with date, belongs to the great generation of in-house movements — robust, repairable, documented. It was serviced in June 2025 by our partner watchmakers: complete disassembly, cleaning, oiling and adjustment — and it is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted with a later black textured leather strap.

What is the Omega Seamaster line?
It is the oldest Omega line still in production: launched in 1948 for the house's centenary, it descends directly from the waterproof watches supplied to the British forces during the war. Initially a de ville watch with reinforced construction, it then gave rise to the diving versions that became famous — and it was from its dressier branch that the De Ville line branched off in 1967.
What is a monobloc case?
It is a case whose middle and caseback are cut from a single piece of steel, with no screwed or snap-on back: the movement is fitted and removed from the front, once the Crystal has been removed. This construction eliminates one gasket — therefore one entry point for water — and that is why Omega used it on its Seamaster. It requires a watchmaker accustomed to it, which our partners are.
The dial shows marks: is that a problem?
It is the patina of a sixty-five-year-old dial that has never been restored, and we prefer to show it rather than hide it: our photographs document it precisely. A refinished dial would present a perfect surface but would have lost its originality — on Omega watches from this period, collectors consistently favor originality over appearance. The overall ensemble of indexes, hands and aperture is crisp and coherent.
How is the date set on this reference?
The calibre 610 does not have a quickset function: to advance the date, turn the hands through a full twenty-four-hour cycle past midnight, as many times as necessary. This is the original operation, not a flaw. A daily winding of around twenty crown turns, without forcing, ensures the day's running — the movement has just undergone a full service (June 2025) and now winds with restored smoothness.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 34mm diameter, 40mm Lug-to-lug, and 8.7mm thickness, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. It is the classic men's watch format of the 1960s, now back at the forefront. The Lug width measures 18mm, making it easy to change the strap.
