Atelier Note
The day and month in apertures, the date at the tip of a red arrow — three calendars within 32mm of steel. It is this watch that Switzerland offered to Churchill in 1946.
An in-house triple calendar with a red arrow
This Movado watch is a Calendograf, the triple calendar line that the La Chaux-de-Fonds manufacture produced from 1938 to 1954 — one of the most important in its history, exhibited at the New York World's Fair in 1940. In 1946, it was a Calendograf that Switzerland chose to offer to Winston Churchill during his post-war visit. Movado was then a fully integrated manufacture, designing and producing its own calibres.
The dial arranges its three calendars in concentric circles: the day and month are displayed in two apertures at nine and three o'clock, and the date is read along the red track around the edge, indicated by a central red arrow hand — the model's visual signature. The applied Arabic numerals, the golden leaf hands, and the central seconds complete a display that delivers the full date at a single glance.
The 32mm steel case, with fixed lugs cut to a point, bears on its flank the correctors for the day and month — two discreet pushers, at two and four o'clock, the construction specific to the Calendograf. The crown was replaced during the life of the watch, which is common on these pieces worn daily.
The Movado calibre 470, a hand-wound mechanical movement, is an in-house movement with modular construction: a complete calendar plate mounted on a three-hand base — one of the earliest architectures of this type, allowing for a compact case and simple servicing. Serviced, it beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour.
Three points to note
01
Complete triple calendar — day and month in apertures, date with red arrow around the edge: the flagship complication of the 1940s.
02
In-house calibre 470 — designed and manufactured by Movado, with a modular calendar plate, serviced and guaranteed for one year.
03
Original dial with even patina — eighty uninterrupted years, apertures and red track intact.
Why choose a vintage Movado?
This pre-owned Movado watch holds a precise place among vintage men's and women's watches : its 32mm case with a 40mm Lug-to-lug can be worn by either men or women, and its complication makes it a collector's watch at a price entirely unrelated to the triple calendars of the Geneva houses. For the past few years, collectors have been rediscovering what Movado was before quartz: a fully fledged manufacture, with in-house calibres.
Like all our vintage mechanical watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: verification of the calibre and its three calendars, examination of the dial, hands and case. Each vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Movado Calendograf?
This is the line of triple calendar watches that Movado produced from 1938 to 1954, at a time when the La Chaux-de-Fonds house was a fully integrated manufacture, designing its own calibres. Presented at the 1940 New York World's Fair, the Calendograf entered history in 1946, when Switzerland offered one to Winston Churchill during his visit. Production stopped in 1954 and the line was never revived.
How are the three calendars read and set?
The day and month are displayed in the two apertures, at nine and three o'clock; the date is read on the red outer track, indicated by the central hand with a red arrow tip. Adjustment is made via the two correctors set into the side of the case, at two o'clock and four o'clock, which are pressed with a fine tool or a pen tip — the period construction of the Calendograf.
Does the calendar correct itself at the end of the month?
No: it is a simple calendar, as on the vast majority of triple calendars from the period. At the end of months with fewer than thirty-one days, the date is corrected by hand using the corrector — an operation that takes only a few seconds. Perpetual calendars, which do without this, were then reserved for a handful of exceptional pieces.
What is a manufacture calibre?
A movement designed and made by the brand itself, rather than purchased from a supplier. Calibre 470 in this watch is one of them: Movado built it with a modular calendar plate mounted on a three-hand base, one of the earliest architectures of this type, which made for a compact case and straightforward servicing. It is this technical independence that earns Movado the renewed attention of collectors today.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 32mm diameter, 40mm Lug-to-lug, and 10mm thickness, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 18cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its fixed 17mm lugs require a suitable strap, like the one fitted to it; this is the original construction of the 1940s, which keeps the strap attached to the case.
