A gold-plated Longines dress watch from the 1980s, with a textured champagne dial

This Longines watch belongs to the generation of quartz dress models that the Saint-Imier house produced in the 1980s, when it brought its classic design to the new calibres. The round 32.5mm case, gold-plated over a steel back, measures only 5.5mm thick: a slim bezel, straight and short lugs, and a barely protruding fluted crown.

The dial is what draws the eye. It is champagne, with a textured finish — a fine brushed crosshatch pattern that catches the light at an angle and gives the surface a depth that a smooth dial does not have. The applied baton hour markers, golden and outlined with a black line, stand out clearly against it, as do the golden baton hands and the central seconds hand. The minute track runs around the edge.

A date window framed in gold opens at three o'clock. The Longines signature and winged hourglass occupy the upper part of the dial, while the word Quartz in script occupies the lower part — Longines inscribed it this way, as a point of pride, on its watches of this generation.

The movement is a Longines quartz calibre 156, with three hands and date, checked and fitted with a new battery. This watch is fitted with a brown crocodile-style leather strap with Buckle steel pin buckle, both later additions.

Three points to note

  • Textured champagne dial — a crosshatched texture that gives the dial its depth, with applied markers and a framed date window.
  • Case gold-plated 5.5mm case — a dress watch that slips easily under a cuff.
  • Longines quartz calibre 156 — checked, new battery, one-year guarantee.

Why choose a vintage Longines?

Buying a vintage Longines watch rather than a contemporary dress watch means gaining access to the design of a house that established the codes of the classic watch long before quartz existed. Longines dress models from the 1980s reprise these proportions — slim case, applied markers, textured dial — with the reliability of a quartz movement.

This watch holds a distinctive place among men's and women's vintage watches: its 32.5mm case, 36.5mm Lug-to-lug and 5.5mm thickness make it a vintage dress watch that can be worn equally by both.

Like all our vintage quartz watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: inspection of the movement, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Every pre-owned Longines watch we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

Is a quartz Longines a real Longines?
Yes. Longines adopted quartz as early as the 1970s and, in the 1980s, produced dress watches that exactly reprise the proportions and design codes of its mechanical models: slim case, applied hour markers, textured dial, winged hourglass. The movement is a Longines calibre, and the watch bears the maison's signature on the dial, crown, and caseback.

What is a tapestry dial?
It is a dial whose surface is worked with a fine criss-cross pattern, like a fabric weave, rather than left smooth or brushed in a single direction. The relief is very subtle, but it changes the way the dial catches the light: viewed head-on it appears uniform, at an angle it reveals its texture. On this watch, the texture is intact and gives the champagne tone its depth.

How should a gold-plated case be cared for?
The plating holds up well when two things are avoided: repeated friction against a hard surface — watch strap in metal, countertop, desk edge — and chemicals, perfumes, and solvents. A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for cleaning. On this watch, the plating shows a few signs of wear that we note; it remains even across the bezel and caseband.

Is quartz reliable in a forty-year-old watch?
Yes. Longines quartz calibres from this generation are robust and easy to maintain: the battery is replaced every two to three years by a watchmaker, and the movement does not require periodic servicing like a mechanical one. This one has been checked, fitted with a new battery, and is guaranteed for one year.

What wrist size is this watch suited to?
With a 32.5mm case and 36.5mm Lug-to-lug, this is the classic dress watch format, ideally worn on a slender to متوسط wrist, where the short lugs follow the curve of the wrist and the 5.5mm thickness slips under a cuff. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on personal taste and the desired look, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The sizing indication is only a guide, never a rule.
